Hi all,

Tyre question: I'm going to be using the SX as a trail/xc bike for a while following an injury. The 2.5 42a tyres on there at the moment make it tiring to cycle anything less than 30 degrees dh 😉 Looking for something much faster rolling but also with a good bite on steep rooty/muddy stuff if I'm feeling gnar. Will be riding in forests, nothing rocky. Won't be running tubeless.

Been looking at rubber queens, barons, nobbly nics so far. Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

Murray

I like bonty xr4s

Isn't there a tyre grouptest in the latest mag?

another vote for spesh purgatory, i have one on the back and a butcher control up front for more grip. nice.

I'm running Maxxis Ardents at the mo (2.4 f, 2.25 r) and quite enjoying the experience (have been running Rubber Queens, Barons and Minions up to this point).

Riding is forest, rocky stuff & trail centre conditions, although it's been mostly dry....

Another vote for Ardents in the gnar-enough but surprisingly fast category. Great tyres - be warned they size up big, 2.4s are huge (in a good way)

How do the Purgatory Controls roll compared to the Clutch SX and is the side knob grip as good? sorry for slight hijack but I'm looking for some tyres for similar duties and thought it better to ask here than start another tyres thread!

Thanks for the recommendations chaps, nice to see a couple of options I hadn't even heard of too! 🙂

As for the grouptest, I'm not sure. Haven't been keeping up with things for the last couple of months, will have to investigate!

Cheers!

Anyone got any experience with Continentals Mountain King II tyre? I use the Mountain King 1 but i fint it punctures a bit too easily. Hash tag learn to ride better.

Sounds like Hans Dampf territory if you want to splash the cash, or On-One Smorgasbord if you aren't a tyre snob. As it is a short term thing, I'd go smorgasbords for £30 a pair!!

The spesh purg is lower profile than the clutch sx, hence why I run it on the back, the butcher control is a better bet for something like the clutch. Im really happy with the purg/butcher combo so far. Seem very predictable.

Also used the Mountain king 2, which i liked, nothing like the mark 1 tread, however steer clear of the cheap wire versions, sidewalls are crap. If I were to get another it would be the protection casing.
