Used a cheap ebay press as I don't like my LBS.

What do I do now ? LBS ? Halfords ? Large hammer ?

Have I damaged the frame ? Or the whatever it's called part of the headset ?

Useless of Sussex

Shit, how much paperwork did you need to **** up a headset?

Take it to a shop before you break it.

Large flat screwdriver and hammer - gently tap out through top of headtube....then try again.

When you press, it don't necessarily just go in, in one. You have to watch for high spots, loosen the press and move it toward the high spots and press again until you've got it going in straight.

Knock that out or concentrate the pressure on the high spot until it pulls level, then centralise it.

Will be fine.Tap out the side that is not in - via the top of the head tube.

When winding in with eBay type press, give light taps with hammer - be gentle - on underside of large washer to straighten cup if it goes slightly out of line. Go slowly.

That really made me laugh - I shall (reluctantly) visit the LBS with my tail between my legs in the morning.

The ebay press (supposedly improved version) is now bent anyway (the twin plates on one side).

Bottom line is I tried to save a few quid and I failed.

Took it to another shop this morning. £20 to fix and put the other bit in - fair and I should have done that to start with!
Thx for the advice.

Also- store the headset in the freezer overnight before fitting it.

What are these ebay presses? Do they not have enough adaptors to get a good fit for a straight press? Doesn't sound that much more precise than being careful with a mallet and block of wood.

Anyway -OP good to hear everything is good and you are on your way with the build now.

They're just a threaded rod with square plates and bolts. It was partly operator error and someone more practical than me and who would have followed the advice above (grease, fridge, etc...) might have succeeded...

Ah, needs lots of lining up by eye and constant moving around then.
Or get one like this:

Generic and not too expensive. Probably less than 2 headset pressing at a LBS.

I'll just point out you didn't fail at the first.

Looks like you managed to buy the right headset to start with.

So it was the second hurdle you got tangled with.
