does anybody know how to extract KLM files from google maps. I am keen to get a route from there for a trip onto my gps

You can search kml to gpx converter and get it done for free… or you could last time i tried
Does it have to be from Google? I don't think Google does this very well. There are other route planners that are very easy to get a gpx file from. I use OnTheGoMaps, it only does shortest route automatically, and no traffic, but you can trace whatever route you want.
Add it to MyMaps (personal part of Google maps) then you can export it there.

There are site like mapstogpx.com where you can paste the URL (link) from Google Maps and it converts it into a GPS file
