Its damaged, need a new BB really, will be it be ok without the tube for a few weeks? I assume it just seals the bearing or does it have more of a role than that?

I assume so but i have never done it

Just stops water and muck in the BB shell sloshing around into the bearings mostly.
drill a 5mm hole in the BB shell if it's a steel frame....

It'll be fine - but put one in when you have a chance.
If your bike gets very wet in the mean time, take out the seatpost and turn it upside down for a while.

What will turning the seatpost upside down achieve?

Drain the water out of the frame.

To clear up any misconceptions (or sarci-ness?)
