Hello,

Looking at buying a bike from Europe on ebay. With insured shipping it comes to £5800. Just wondering what charges will be added and by how much?

Thanks,

Matt

20% VAT, Import Duty (6% for eBikes, 14ish % for normal pedal cycles) and a clearance fee.

Duty gets added first, VAT next so it’s 36.8% of the total consignment cost plus a handling / clearance fee - depends on the courier.

Thanks. That's killed that then. That is pretty expensive. I wonder when Raleigh will begin producing lightweight innovative carbon xc bikes then.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Can't you claim back the vat from country of origin. Or is the seller covering import costs?

Edinburgh tourist tat shops had lots of "VAT free" signs for the American money.

N.b the shop should refund you/not charge you VAT. So it's really only the 14% you have to add if you're looking at the full price.

Not sure if you're serious about Raleigh. There's 2 Raleigh companies, both owned by big European conglomerates.

I'm joking about Raleigh. Although it would be great if the brand were back in the game.

So, it may just be the 14%. I'll try to pin them down. Thanks all.

Check ebay, I think they add the import vat at time of sale, if it is a business seller.

What is it?  If its made in the EU don’t you pay 0% duty?  (Still pay VAT but so long as you only pay it in one country it doesn’t make much difference)

No... Just got hit with this, going the opposite direction (UK -> Spain). VAT (can be reclaimed in the country of origin, so a massive pain) + another 10% or so of import tariff. (And in this case probably 100% avoidable: my daughter sent my dad a link for a sweatshirt she wanted for her birthday, when he clicked on the link it automatically redirected him to the UK site...)

It's confused the hell out of me and bizarrely the gov.uk website is also not entirely straight forward.

It's a Cannondale Scalpel so not made in the EU. I always thought that VAT was paid once so it is just getting to grips with the import duty which is duty code 8712 ( I got that far!). That's 14% and it is a business seller so add the 14% to the total cost and that should give me a ball park figure. What a terrible backward step all this is. The poor buggers who try to run a business with all of this have my sympathies. It hasn't actually removed much bureaucracy. Just created more of it with additional cost. Madness.
