This question has probably been asked before but can I use my existing discs (formula) with shimano brakes or do I need to buy shimano discs?

No you don't need to buy new discs unless:
1) They're the wrong size. E.g. if the discs / adaptors are for 180mm but the new brakes are 185mm
2) The old discs are worn out / bent
3) The old discs might be contaminated with oil / something else that you can't shift
