In London for a couple of days this week, with road bike and lights. Based EC1. Looking for a 30/40 mile ride somewhere from there, where would STW recommend?

Cheers!

From EC1 a 30/40 mile ride doesn't really take you out of the urban sprawl; although Mill Hill East/Woodside Park/Barnet is an option although it's a vipers nest of commuter traffic and ENDLESS traffic lights.

The river/canal path out to the lea valley would be my bet if your time is limited and your bike will take it.

Ride to Waterloo, train to East Sheen or Richmond and do a few laps of Richmond Park - the traffic gates will be closed from 6pm so it'll be traffic free

Richmond park is a good shout actually, minimal thinking required. Cheers!

There's a few routes out of London, head out west via Embankment, Thames Path, Richmond Park, Lower Hampton Road all the way to Windsor Great Park or the usual south-east roady route out via Crystal Palace to the North Downs area.

I'd prob stick to Richmond Park in the dark though, it's great. Watch out for badgers and deer, especially if they are fighting!

Ride to Waterloo, train to East Sheen or Richmond

You can't take a bike on a train departing Waterloo during rush hour.

Just ride, it's not far -ย  Etape du Embankment to Chelsea / Putney, nip through Barnes and you're there.

If you've got some slightly wider tyres, the Tamsin Trail around the park edge is fun in the dark ๐Ÿ™‚

Isn't Richmond Park in deer cull season at the moment? Check opening times carefully - if they're shooting deer them you won't get in at all!

Good point about the cull - 6 weeks from 5th Feb apparently so still on, park is shut from 8pm.
