Can you get purchase on the bit between the pads with some needle-nose pliers? You could also try to cut a fresh slot on the head with a dremel.
Couldn't you just use the traditional split pin for your event? Every pair of pads I get comes with it.
EDIT: I didn't mind seeing it twice.
