What do you think of your Moment?
I have one but she has never excited me, I bought her on the rebound from a Cotic Hemlock (one of the first ones) that went wrong but have never been happy with her.
She jacks herself up at the back when she hits a bump and TFTuned have worked at the rear shock twice but I still dont like it.
Is it time she went on ebay?
Interested to hear your comments
Dont all shout at once like?
if you are thinking of shifting the frame let me know, i might be interested as I'm looking at one on fleabay at the moment.
cheers
Taz
i had one last year and ended up selling it. For my type of riding it was too much and only really got tested when i went to the big mountains.
Do you have the coil or air rear shock? I had the coil and never had an issue with the back end.
i now have a long travel hardtail and is much more fun on the trails.
Tazzymtb - I have one I am about to sell. Medium, pewter anodized all over (not black rear). It's a MK1 with DHX 5, a Black Chris King HS fitted and an Ellsworth saddle. I only want £550 for it.
my brother loves his (agree with coil comment though) 🙂
geetee1972 can you send some pics to tazwadie@hotmail.com

She?
I really didn't get on with the jacking of the rear suspension on the test Moment that we had at the magazine last year, especially on big hits and slow speed, steep riding.
Agree with Ed-O, a fantastic trail centre bike, but rubbish for steep techy slow speed drops and general playing around. Someone off here suggested swapping to a Fox Float shock ie RP3 or RP23 with no propedal, but the BB is still a bit too high and I don't think playing around with shocks alters that fact. Beautiful looking and excellent at certain things like traction up steep techy bits and cornering. I think the ST mag review summed it up correctly, it's a Harley Davison of MTB, brilliant for riding/cruising in the mountains, but not good for play biking. Not sure if that came from Ed, but it was a good summary.
I've got one. I live and ride on the North Shore* regularly where big hits and slow and techy are the order of the day.
I have no idea what Ed-O and BANana are talking about as mine most definitely doesn't 'jack up'. But then again, I run an old Vanilla coil shock on mine. I don't run pro-pedal as it's not needed, even on long fireroad climbs
*Yes, the real original Vancouver North Shore not some Todmordon cobbled cart track 😆
I sold mine to giantjason. Never had any problems with it jacking up, but as Jason says "ours" was coil.

I love my Moment. Had it for 4 years. Just nails everything you put in front of it. Never had any problems with the back (DHX coil) and its been over and down just about everything. I do now ride a lighter full suss for everyday trails though as my set up is more freeride. So the Moment just comes out on the 'big' days and for the trail centres.
I have one (coil) and I love it for big lakes rides and scottish trail centre etc.
Also ride a Blur which I prefer for more XC stuff, but I love riding the Moment - absolutely plush rear end, magic carpet ride and, as long as you're not a 'masher', it climbs really well.
That's odd - I haven't experienced any rear jack on mine.
I run a DHX Coil or an Ellsworth tuned Float R shock. If memory serves me right Ed-O's bike had a DHX-Air shock (which I've read some people have tuning issues with).
Mine's a mark II rather than the new swoopified mark 3 frame but I don't think that should make any difference.
What shock are you running?
DHX 5 Pushed
DHX 5 Pushed
Coil or air?
Coil with a Ti spring
Mine is a DHX5 air shock and I've tried it with no propedal and sloppy with low air pressure, to try limited travel, but to get it to have no 'perched' feel. It didn't really make that much difference. I really wanted to try something else, but have decided against throwing more money at it. The BB is 14"+ and I don't think a shock change will make that much difference to the geometry. I had a chat with Ed-O at a Gisburn Dig Day and he pretty much concured with what I experienced. I'm not sure about this talk of 'jacking' at the back. I just found the BB to be too high for slow speed playing around in the local quarry or moor.
A fantastic ride otherwise tho.
Just put my MK2 med frame on the classifieds 😆
I had major issues with the DHX air on my mk 2, blew through the travel too quick and pedalled badly. I've had an RP23 for the last 18 months or so and it made a MASSIVE difference. Rides like a trail bike now and was everything I expected of the bike when I bought it.
I bought an Ells Id way back in 2004 after testing it and was amazed by the performance of the suspension. Coming from high pivot Oranges on which I hated the feeling of the chain tugging at the cranks whenever you tried to pedal in the rough and the rear locking up and having almost no suspension when you brake, the Ells felt amazing. It took a little time to get the suspension set up right, at first going down steps and the like the fork would dive and the rear extend pitching me forward(is that the "jack" you describe?) anyway it just took a little time with the suspension settings to stop it happening.
Fast forward to 2008 and I wanted some thing longer travel for bigger mountains, I tried commencal, Santa cruz, lappierre and a moment and chose the moment. I really do not like any suspensions system that stiffens the suspension using chain force to improve pedalling. The Ells just felt right for my style of riding. it is a personal thing. Hence why a well known tester on another magazine loves ells and ed-0 doesn't. personal taste. I like my suspension soft and mushy and able to plough through anything without interuption-old school.
The dhx air shock was awful, it really did not suit the bike, blowing through the middle and feeling uncontrolled, I sent it to MOJO and they tuned it, it was better but still not right.
I too felt the BB was too high, fine for pedalling through rock gardens but not much else, as I said before I like my suspension soft so I run 30% sag which helps.
As an experiment I took the 190x57 shock off my patriot, slackening the angles and lowering the BB, This and the fact it was a non pro pedal coil made it feel great.
Incidently I noticed when i read the review that the fork fitted was a fox 36, which is 25mm taller axle crown than Ells recommend for the MK3 Moment, further exasperating the high BB. A 150mm fork matching the rear would be a better choice. However that BB is still high even if it does corner beautifully.
Which brings me to today and the reason for this post Ells just released a new 2011 version with a 14inch BB and an increase to 165mm travel. It also has a tapered head tube. (and is 60g lighter woo!)(geometry is very comparable to the Nomad)
Now this bike with the right shock might have it all right. depending on the fork/shock fitted you could have a low, long, slack, light, non-jacking all mountain mile muncher that is great for High speed and slow tech sections. I hope so, i would like to try one and see.
Further to my post above, I have a Talas 36 fork and most of the time I run it at 140 as this seems to be where its most comfortable and then just wind it out for the rocky lakes descents.
I really like mine although I'm not really man enough to do it justice. I weighed the frame once, 7.14 pounds including shock which is light for a 6 inch ally frame.
The bike still has the name of one of the biggest tools in the industry lazer etched on the downtube. 14" BB? Is that low then?...... I went from ICT to the DW Link and never looked back. The new Spot out performs the Moment in many areas in my opinion and experience. Especially hate the way ICT hangs on certain hits, but that's more to do with the axle path. Also the mini links make the Spot way stiffer than the Moment. The DW link pedals better, more plush, as active under braking and doesn't wallow in it's travel. So I agree with the OP, the symptoms he described are inherent of that projected pivot design - like most suspension it's jack of all trades, master of none.
