I got a bit of riding footage on my phone in real player but I can't seem to work out how to edit it - would anyone know how pls?
I've got Windows Movie Maker, but it doesn't seem to recognise the file format...

What file format is it? Try and get a file converter, then convert it to MP4 or something readable by Windows Movie Maker.

As PlopNofear said - upload to zamzar.com or similar then convert to wmv or avi
