i know all the standard bits in edale to get over towards jacobs ladder, doen the route plenty of times...but ive never ventured into hayfield, always just climbed up through to jacobs and back around to edale....

i want to tag in a extra loop in hayfield, ive never ridden there before so plotting a route seems easy enough, but i have no idea what the terrain is like, guessing as its around the corner from jacobs it will be rocky/sandy/gravelly esque....but with it being a little damp would like to avoid anywhere boggy? please can you help? does anybody have an ideal route for the hayfield section for me for this weekend avoiding any boggyness? just my mates coming and doesnt get out that often so dont want it to be a too hard slog in gloop for him

any help appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚

The classic route is the: Classic Hayfield Loop. (See this month's MBUK and other sources)

Unfortunately, time of year that sweet, sweet section of whooping joy moorland singletrack that comprises the middle section of it will be as boggy as gubbins.

You can try climbing up the big hill with the antennae at the top and descending a little technical (slippery) bit near the top (take a left), but that's quite a boring long climb on a rocky track for little else out.

Sorry, not much help, but you do get a free bump..! ๐Ÿ™‚

hmmm so is it worth avoiding hayfield full stop then? i have no idea where the other bits you mentioned are to be honest....if its all likely to be a bit boggy around there then perhaps ill avoid it, im avoiding WLT for this reason and possibly cut gate....

thought adding hayfield in will make it a bit longer and something ive not done before either

Half way down Oaken Clough bear right under Kinder Low, over Broad Clough and down to the reservoir, then either up the cobbles to the shooting cabin or up Snake Path, Middle Moor, Blackshaw Farm, Lantern Pike, up past the Quarry, New Allotments, Peep o Day Farm or Phoside and High Gate, then either back down to the bottom of Coldwell Clough and backover Jacobs, or over to South Head, Roych Clough and on to Rushup Edge.

Whats your e-mail and I'll sort out a more detailed description if you want? (mines in profile)

I'd do a loop up the 20 Trees Track and down over Middle Moor, then back via Monk's Road, dive down over Lantern Pike or the other way into Hayfield, do a loop up over Chinley Churn, drop down through Peep of Day, cross road, turn right, back over the Roych. It might get a bit sludgy in a typical Peak sort of way. Or man up, put some more miles in and come back over Cut Gate...

And that'll be bog fest by now. You're better off dropping straight down and up over 20 Trees, that way you can also do the campsite descent, cross the bridge under the Sportsman - you should be able to clean it - left then right up the obvious bridleway.

I'd be amazed if that section under Kinderlow End is remotely dry, it's mostly on soft peat and tears up really badly. It's also not much fun to ride unless it's running very dry and firm.

TwentyTrees is here

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=404210&Y=387335&A=Y&Z=120

There are 19 as one came down in a storm I htink

Go down this track

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=404865&Y=386625&A=Y&Z=120

Cross the bridge at the bottom, push up to the Sportsmans Arms, turn left and look out for the signs on the right

then as per BWD

cheers nbt - im looking to join into hayfield from coldwell clough, so do you mean to ride up those two bits you linked and ride back down them again? the loop will be defo starting in edale not in hayfield if that matters....

I think nbt means go down the second link, Camp site decent, once you've decended Coldwell Clough then up 20 trees (Snake Path), and left onto Middle Moor at the Shooting Cabin.

BWD/NBT the chinley churn loop would that but up the BOAT (i think) from birch vale, loop round the southern end (throstle bank) and down POD? Only been up the steep tarmac climb by the pub, ollerset? and phoside/far phoside.

Phoside to highgate any good?

Oh and how rideable it 20trees not tried it, normally do the silly steep cobbles at the res.

From Phoside Farm to the main road is a fast track, bit of tarmac, stoney and loose in places. But its the bit from Foxholes Clough down thats fun.

20 trees rideable all the way every time from the 2nd gate.

Only rode the cobbles once to the top just so I could say I have, always go via 20 trees now.

Have a look at this

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/11537800

It starts over in Marple, but shows many of the trails you would use, you should be able to combine that with a map to see how to add them to your loop

I htink yhou can even download it as GPX

edit - for instance, at about the 17 mile mark you would follow the pennine bridleway down to mile 6. Also, at mile 8 you could go up New Allotments rather than going all the way round the end of Chinley Churn

I know this might cause a debate, but the whole Jacobs Ladder effort is best ridden clockwise. I ride a hardtail - anticlockwise means shallower downhills, and what with all the rocks, it's a bit harder to keep momentum. Plus Jacobs Ladder is impossible as a climb. If anyone can ride it, then I think they should face trial by water for being a witch!

Seriously though, this is what I'd recommend. Start at Edale and climb to Hollins Cross. Contour around Mam Tor then onto Rushup Edge. Down into Roych Clough and back up Mt Famine. Then Coldwell Clough into Hayfield. If you think you're in the zone, you can go through to the Sett Valley trail and climb Lantern Pike and then a quarry road for a drop into Rowarth. Then out and across Middle Moor to the Shooting Cabin. If you're feeling merely human, climb Snake Path from Hayfield to the cabin. Drop to the reservoir, back up to Kinderlow End then down into Oaken Clough. One horrible drag to the top the Ladder - take five and then give it some welly. Cruise back to Edale for tea and medals. Lovely.

Whatever you do, think of all the people who cannot ride this stuff that often while you are doing it. Either in sympathy or smugness.

Roych Clough forms part of one of the longest unbroken sections of BOAT (or whatever they call it now) in the UK so it gets loads of people using it. I believe there's an "advisory" one way route on it now. It goes from Chapel Gate up to Rushup Edge, down that, turn right and down into Roych Clough to the stream, up the other side and over Mount Famine. They run it that way cos too many idiots were chewing up Roych Clough trying to go up the rock steps and failing miserably.
That's why Chapel Gate has been sanitised - it's now almost a smooth gravel track, it's had LOADS of work done on it.

Oh and anti-clockwise FTW. Better climbs and descents in general and more trail options although you do have to push up Jacobs Ladder. In some respects the Hayfield Loop is massively over-rated and over-ridden. It's just that it's the default Peaks route that most mags stick to which is great cos it keep everyone off the better trails!

hora - were you wearing a orange puffer jacket yesterday? sure it was you in the layby in edale ๐Ÿ˜†

thought you went out saturday? or didnt you go with pook in the end?

we did the loop around edale through to hayfield (middle moor descent is quality to the steps which my mate bottled at the last minute almost going over the bars ๐Ÿ˜† ) then back through climbing through to rushop edge and down back to edale via the singletrack at the gate at bottom of mamtor!

was a most excellent day - massive massive thanks to BWD for the hayfield loop and managing to keep us on a track that wasnt a mudfest - was pretty much a great route which didnt include any boggy messes! and also Carlos for the map of hayfield and words of wisdom too!

all in all a cracking ride, tough 30 miler but definitely worth the effort!

Yep. What time was it- It'd been about 730am?? I was too tired to start the ride down the bottom. At the end of the ride- boy that climb back punished me ๐Ÿ˜†

I went out Fri (Hebden), Sat (Pook/Ladybower) and yesterday Kinder Circuit (I'm on a push to get fit again).

thought so - yeah around 7.30ish or there abouts! what is the kinder circuit? obviously around edale way....we climbed up from bottom of edale up mam tor, was pretty slippy but a good start to have the legs pumping!

we did chapel gate coming back down, it was alright until those huge grids/gulleys - jesus they are a bit lethal, the first few you can kinda bunny hop, then the next ones down the middle of it......

That jacket is my 'emergency' Mountain Equipment jacket that I picked up really cheap in a sale once. Everyone takes the piss out of its loudness though hence it only comes out when no one is around ๐Ÿ˜†
