I've lost my Cateye Triple Shot charger, and Cateye want £50 to replace it, plus the batteries are shot too. (Not happening on a what is now low powered light set)

Anyhow I dont really do much night riding, and to be honest cant see that I will be doing in a hurry, however I need some lights for Mountain Mayhem and the occasional night ride.

Trout has been fantastic with his advice, but basically I would be as well buying one of his new lights, which isnt an option at the minute.

Searching on here I have found a few threads about the £50 dealtime extreme lights, and Trout even did a review of them. Most of the threads appear to be about 1 year old, so how are people finding these lights, are they still working, or have they all packed up?

These are the lights.

Now there are these too for £35 @ 800 lumens ?!?!

I want to keep costs down, but was also wondering about a helmet torch as well, and people are talking about this, but it sounds like it will only last 1 hour on high.

http://www.kaidomain.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductId=11097

and I guess I will need to buy a spare battery and charger for it?

Basically I am trying to keep cost down for now, but I dont want to buy stuff on a completely false economy.

Ta

Mine is still runnning fine no problem prob get about 4 hours usage out of it a week . Some of the guys in our group have just had their battery pack up but I think a replacement is only £20 and could have been to do with the sealing issue.

Mine have been fine, slight battey issue in that it seems to last ~4 hours then die completely, so the voltage indictor still reads 3/4 full right up unitll it suddenly switches off.

For £50 I can't complain.

For those 2 you linked to, the 900lumen one there's one with a new battery which is better sealed and an even newer one with a new lamp unit, all for circa £50.

I've got this one which is a better sealed battery for about 60p more. I like it. It works, I get about 1.75 hours on high before the indicator on the back changes to the blue mode (no idea how long it last on high before switching off but i did get 1 1hr ride and 1 1.5hr ride out of 1 charge and the rides were about 2 weeks apart so I would say their stated run times are fairly accurate)

and i'm thinking about this torch for the helmet, although my Tesco one is still working fine.

I don't have one of the lights myself- got a couple of P7 torches because the light wasn't out- but I know of 5 that have been going strong for over a year each, one of them I had to fix a bracket for a mate after he broke it and another I think needed a touch of soldering after a crash pulled a cable loose but not bad going. Only downer was the very slow delivery.

I've got one of those XML torches on the way from kaidomain to compare with my old P7s, not sure yet whether it'll get used with my battery pack or not but it looks promising... Seems like on max power it'll run less time than a P7 but be brighter, on lower settings it'll get the same output as a P7 but with longer runtime so we'll see.

The battery pack can be overcharged/get out of balance. Two batteries overcharge and two are very undercharged, keep an eye on the charger when the light goes from red to green take the lead out immediately. All good apart from that.

three of us got them a year or so ago. three fails over differing timescales - my light unit, and x2 batteries. i got a magicshine replacement (effectively the same light but UK plug) and thats still going strong 15 months on. two of the guys have gone for DX torches (no separate battery or cables) and have had no problems. if i had the money i would go for an Exposure or Lumicycle.

Only issue I've had with mine over a winters worth of use is the battery pack splitting. Mine has a black plastic (almost shrink wrapped) like cover and I reckon it gets a bit brittle when it's cold. Had one minor off and when I got home I noticed the pack had split. Still seems to work fine though.

Anyone know the SKU for the new battery pack (battery only)?

Cheers

My mate and me have had ours for 18 months and our batteries were starting to get a bit tired, they would cause the light to 'dull' after about 45 mins.

We've both bought new batteries and they're going fine again.

Have been using the 808 900 lumen model for commuting for a month or two now. My bike sits outside in the rain at work, and I've not had any problems with sealing so far.
The build quality is probably a wee bit lower than brand name lights. I did a couple of simple mods to fix a loose lens and stiffen up the lamp bracket assembly. The plastic for the bracket looks more like the waxy PVC type plastic, rather than the harder ABS style stuff you get on other lamps. Having said that, it all seems to be standing up to daily winter commuting use OK, and for the price I think it was a great deal.

Swoosh thanks for the link, theres quite a few on their site to sift through!

I think I will purchase a set.

Northwind - Dum clueless question, do the torches come with any form of charger, or do you have to buy one separately?

Usually you get the batteries and charger seperately. I'm not sure if this is still the cool charger to get but I've got 2 of these... http://www.dealextreme.com/p/dsd-18650-cr123a-charger-black-936

The reason it was recommended to me is that it comes with its own 2-prong wall wart but it'll run off the old model (fat plug) Nokia mobile charger too, same plug, same demands, but a bit higher quality... So you can get car chargers, cheap replacements, etc and I had some lying around already.

I’ve got the first one the P7 you linked, 18 month or so and not too bad, Mine has recently developed an issue with the switch on the lamp but is still usable, the battery sealing is not up to much but that is easily fixed, I still get about 6 hours mixed use out of a fully charged battery.
I think if I were buying another now it would be one of the better sealed versions of the P7 for a few pennies more… but I’m generally very happy with the purchase,

I also have a 2 mode 1x18650 P7 torch for my helmet which is also very good for the money, I think it was about £25-ish and well worth the money IMO a cheap one on the bars would definitely be useable enough for me to ride dark single track with (perhaps not quite as fast as with the Bastid and a helmet light)…

Has anyone's got a dead light unit that I could use for my dynamo light build?

I have a kit for sale here. Its much brighter than the DX offerings and will last longer.
