I just got thinking about those 4 inch tyres and my Thule 591 roof rack. Can it work? How crazy is the wind resistance from them??
Rachel (trying to talk myself out of a fat bike still)
I don't think they'd make that much difference compared to the turbulence created by normal knobblies, cables and hoses, bars, stem, saddle, post etc.
Note, that in the best STW traditions there is no science involved in by answer.
I'm not convinced they'd sit in the wheel holders or that the ratchet bands would reach round the rim/tyre. Could probably take the wheel holder parts off and bodge something with bungies?
I fit mine to straight onto a Thule 951 no problem, I just use some webbing straps with a decent metal buckle and I do wrap the webbing strap round a few times to take up the slack, but have never had any issues.
Damn you and your common sense Swavis
You will be ok with a good strap on ๐ฏ
I've not put mine on my Thule roof carrier but have on the towbar carrier. Some have placed some plastic gutter in the wheel holders to hold the wider tyre and to stop it moving.
I tend to drop as much air out of the tyre and then strap it down well.
I'm liking the gutter idea!!
Rachel
I use some offcuts of gutter and webbing straps
