[Closed] DT Swiss Rear Hub - tool to get the B&57&8D toothed ring out

Hi

got a set of dtswiss wheels in nice condition except that the toothed ring that engages with the freehub pawls is mangled up and needs replacing (too much power, that's what it must be... lols)

It's easy enough to get hold of a replacement part, but the tool to get it out is excruciatingly expensive and makes the job barely worth it! They are three pawl hubs so need one of these: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/dt-swiss-threaded-ring-insert-removal-tool/rp-prod137060

Anyone got the tool to do it? And if so would you lend it out for a couple days? I'm happy to cover postage costs etc.

Worth considering is that it may be possible to retro fit a star ratchet drive ring and freehub into a 3 pawl hub shell.
Tools wise, I'd check with your lbs first. It can take more force than you expect to release the thing and a vice is very useful.

So far no luck with the LBS... trying a different shop tomorrow

I have a tool and you're welcome to call in with your wheel and do it. I broke a tool in the past as the force you need is unbelievable. This tool is welded into a block of 4" steel.

My location is La2 8dg

Poor some boiling water onto the ring/hub before trying to undo it. Has worked for me in the past when one just wasn't moving at all.

That's why after cracking my first tool, the second one I fully welded into a 4" slab of steel so you can really put it in a vice.

In reassemble I used plenty of copperslip which does help a bit for the next time but it's still an unbelievable amount of force you need even then.

I once snapped a Record vice into two trying to dismantle my 240 rear. It can be a real effort.

watch out there are two types of ring with different pitches. we've got the tool for one and our other shop the other. LBS is your friend in these circumnstances. good luck
