Hi all,

I need to change the bearings on a Roval wheel freehub, it has DT Swiss 240 internals. Anybody know how to get the bearings out? I can't work out if there's something holding them in apart from the interference fit. Happy to take it to LBS if you need specialist tools

Cheers!

The very centre one needs a special tool to remove the ratchet. The others are all hammers. But, the middle one generally needs done far less than the outer ones, like maybe 1/3d as often in uk climate, as it's so well protected so there's a very good chance that once you get it in bits you'll find that one's OK and you just need to change the others.

Drift the outer bearing out with a punch or other suitable tool.

You can get onto the inner race to do this by shifting the spacer sleeve to the side slightly.
Use circling pliers to remove the circlip holding the inner bearing against the star ratchet carrier.
Drift inner bearing out the same direction as the first one.
There is a thin washer between the bearing and the carrier.
Clean up and drift new bearings back in with a light coating of grease on the outer race. Use a socket slightly smaller than the outer race diameter so it fits inside the free hub body but large enough that you are only using force on the outer race. Re-sent circlip, install spacer sleeve, drift second bearing

Done
No special tools required. Bearings are 6902rs

Cheers for that, think I know what you mean as I have done a little reading- it's the non drive side bearing in the hub itself that needs the ratchet tool? I've changed the non-drive about a year ago but left that one. So the freehub bearings just bash out?

Yes. Unless anything has changed in their freehub design over the one I did last week from a 2012 ex1750 wheel.

Cheers Bearback, I sent the last reply before I'd seen yours. Will get hammering tonight!

Oh sorry dude, I misread and thought it was the whole hub not just the freehub!

it's the non drive side bearing in the hub itself that needs the ratchet tool?

No, it's the middle one of the 4 - 2 in the freehub body, one on the NDS side of the shell, one in the middle of the shell.

BearBack's instructions for removing the freehub bearings are spot on.

So I've knocked both the bearings out, but it was a slightly different process.

Not sure if I have the hub spec wrong when describing, it's these

The outer freehub bearing came out as described, by moving spacer to one side and driving out. The inner had no circlip, and I drove it out in the opposite direction to the outer.

Very easy though! Only thing is to be careful as the aluminium is soft
