I've been using Squirt dry lube recently but seeing as my local ride is now officially a mud-fest and will probably stay that way until it freezes should I use a wet lube instead?

Dry lube is no good in the wet; I used to use a dry lube from a well known brand and I recall finding rust on the chain at the end of each wet ride. IMO, the best thing for the winter is the Scottoiler ( http://www.scottoiler.com/pc/Category_Bicycle_Oiler.html); it allows you to keep the drive train clean in the worst of conditions, and simplifies the post ride cleaning (no need for degreaser). I have been using it for couple of years now, and never looked back.

I just hate the black sticky gunk that wet lube turns into, it gets all over everything. At least with dry lube it cleans off easily and doesn't hang onto all the grit even if it does need reapplying after each outing.

I used squirt all summer and loved it - but I just don't think its man enough for winter

back to finish line wet - but I use a SS in the winter so the "nasty black gunk" issues aren't as pronounced as on a geared bike (its easy to remove the gunk with a cloth from the chainring and sprocket before re-lubing, not so easy with multiple chainrings and a cassette)

Rock n Roll extreme is good for me in all conditions. I can get 50 miles or so of off-roading without re-application.

I used to use a Scottoiler, but the darned thing kept breaking and I have the suspicion that it caused the 'apparent suicide' of a couple of rear mechs.

I was using Finish line Wet lube since I gave up on the Scottoiler, but this summer and now into the winter I've switched over to the Finish line stuff with the red top. It seems to do the job just fine and my drive chain is every bit as shiny as it used to be with a Scottoiler fitted. I think the red topped lube is the dry lube, innit?

Yep, red top is dry and green top is wet. Never noticed much difference to be honest. Was using dry but now using wet because that was all they had in the shop. Bike does get a good lube up after each wash though and any excess lube is always wiped off. Never had any gunk issues with either wet or dry lube.
