or are there....?

crazy, especially when maintenance seems like such an issue with them all.
got a post on order - wondering if an old inner tube bodged to it will help!

My Gravity Dropper came with a guard on it.

Probably the same reason people generally don't run guards on forks/shocks - once dirt/grit gets in, it doesn't get out. I've been running a X-fusion Hilo for about a year, I give it a clean and lube after each ride and I've changed the oil + cable once. Never had an issue.

I zip tied a strip of inner tube round the collar and too the rails at the top, works well, Keeps stuff off bet lets it out again. Matches the inner tube on other bits of the bike, refreshing not to pay £15 for something so simple

As Steezysix says.
Years ago we all got lulled into thinking wrapping neoprene around the fork stanchions was a great idea.
Turns out we all buggared our forks up prematurely. . . . and it looked stupid too.

You can still buy fork boots. Stick one of them on it and let it collect all the crap of the day in there and grind the shit out of everything.

My gravity dropper came with one as well.

7 years on it's still smooth and works perfectly. I did clean and lube it once though in 2009.

Does it really? I serviced my KS after a year of all-seasons scottish gloop, and there was practically no dirt ingress. I was surprised tbh but pleased.

I opened up my Reverb after about 10 months of riding through the winter/spring mud and all summer - no dirt at all. The seals are good.

Just dont clean the shaft with WD40 as that will dilute the oil in the wiper.

Now I use a crud catcher in the winter, modified slightly to fit, as I was getting a muddy bum. That will also keep mud off it if your still worried.
