Right then,

Yesterday my gears were grinding, but otherwise working perfectly on my spare bike, so this morning I oiled them, and now it's slipping in every gear. Not skipping from cog to cog but actually jumping off and re-engaging onto the same sprocket on the cassette. I'm used to this happening when the chain and a particular sprocket on the cassette are terminally worn, but not instantly on every sprocket.

Also on the commute this morning the problem went away for a while, only to come back when I downshifted, even though I was putting less pressure on the pedals.

Any ideas? Sticky link on the chain or is it just worn out?

Stretched cable? try putting half a turn on the adjuster barrel on the shifter see if that helps....

when you say you oiled them this morning, I take it you cleaned them first...

Failing all of that you'll need the following:

+ 3 strong friends and a spare evening...

Could be the cable sticking in the outer, not releasing properly

Cheers guys, already monkeyed with the barrel adjuster on the way in didn't seem to do owt other than bugger up the indexing. Will lube up the cables and see if that fixes it, otherwise it looks like a normal Thursday night in for me.

If they are adjusted correctly sounds like they are worn out.

Just got back from the bike shop and their verdict was: Sticky link(s).
