MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
My new Enduro has Elixir brakes that have been great for the first 2 months. I changed the wheels from stock Deore to my old Hope Pro 2 wheels - using all the same brake hardwear and disks etc.
The front wheel is fine but the rear has a horrible vibration when I try and brake hard. All the fixtures and fittings are tight and the calliper is centred - my LBS says the pads need to bed in again...What does the collective wisdom of STW say? Anyone got a) a good explanation and b) a solid cure?
Clean the discs and lightly sand the pads and rebed in
could be contamination on the disc from fitting - even a greasy fingerprint could do it
Check everything is tight - caliper mounts, disc bolts, wheel spindlea nd check for bearing play
I had the same problem with my Elixir CRs See here for some solutions:

Avid now supply ppl who suffer with the vibration/gobble in the States with a solid rotor if still in waranty might be worth giving them a bell??
You have put the rotor on the right way round?
Yep rotor is the right way round and everything has been retightened by my LBS so no schoolboy mistakes. Will try sanding and cleaning tonight.
Do it. Do it tonight 8)
Are you using Avid's stupid CPS method for aligning the caliper to the rotor?
My juicy 3's have started doing that as well. I've tried sanding the pads before and that's worked if they get a bit polished. I cooked my brakes today on some long steep descents and they don't work so well now :(. I might try some Hopes next.
interesting to stubble on this. I have the same problem with the avid Elixir's on my Orange Crush too. I didn't find that sanding the pads helped
Mine have always been fine (hardtail) but a mate had the same problem with his elixirs, on an Enduro too funnily enough. Cured by gluing a small fishing weight to his caliper, about 5g IIRC, suggested to him by a bike shop mechanic. No idea why it should but it worked!
Mine have been fine since I swapped to Hope floating rotors.

It altered the resonant frequency of the caliper. People have also had positive results by tying an old inner tube to the seat stay.
Hi all, I've been looking at Elixirs as an alternative to my shimano brakes - is this a common problem? Do you rate the elixir's on their performance and ease of rebuilding \ sourcing new pistons etc.?? Thanks!
