We're off to the Alps in a few weeks, I was considering some protection for my downtube, anyone got any recomendations or advice?
An old tube or tyre..?
cheers.
Its a good idea as rocks get thrown up pretty regularly.
Basic is to use a few layers of duct tape, ugly is to tape on something else even pipe lagging opened out or a section of tyre as you say.
Just wind a old inner tube around and finish it off with a cable tie
Coldon
Cable tie or wrap an old tube around it. Or cut up an old tyre and cable tie it on there. Down forget the bottom bracket area as well.
It might look ugly, but it's only for a week
You can buy velcro strip by the metre in B&Q. Either side will do (i.e. hook or loop). I usually go for the softer loop stuff. Worked a treat in the Alps last year through a mudfest for the first few days
I keep meaning to get one of these for the Alpine.
Section of old tyre was standard when I used to ride there (but then so were 26" wheels so it may be a stoning offence now).
maxiss dh tubes are 1.5mm thick. make excellent downtube protectors, one tube will do 4 bikes.
