just enetered the 100 in a day but starting to think the 50:50 would be more fun?

id rather do 100 in a day, as a 50 mile ride is just a normal (ish) ride but am I going to miss out on the point of the event?

looks like it’s just a big social anyway... is the 50:50 better and the 100 just full of grumpy racers (probably like me) who just ride and go home?

I've been looking at this. Not decided on it yet but I think I'd go for the 50:50 as it looks like more of a social than anything else. There's a great video linked to on the booking page that shows this year's event. Looks great.

I watched the video after I had booked. That’s what got me thinking, that all the 100 milers must just skulk off at their own at the end and miss the fun?

Sort of different events. The 100 is quite a big day, the 50:50 is 2 more relaxed days, albeit carrying stuff, and 'some beer'.

Done the 100 a couple of times - plenty of good times after in the Red Lion, you just won't get the goat and beer on the Saturday night

Did the 50:50 for the first time last year.  Honestly probably one of the best events I have done, level pegging with SSUK.  We took it pretty relaxed and the 100's were finishing before us 🙂

Also the 50:50 riders stayed pretty dry but the 100 got dumped on in the morning :d

We stayed for food afterwards and to watch the yard of ale chugging, and then headed back to Brighton getting home in the early hours, I'll aim to camp sunday night this time.

You are bikepacking though so could get a bit pricey if you need to buy camping gear

I have booked to do the 100 more for a challenge than anything else - we have booked up to stay in Swanage for the week after the event, so I will be hanging out at the Red Lion to support fellow riders in drinking beer after the 50:50 as well - can’t be bothered with getting all the bike packing kit out 😂

I've done the 100 twice. It's a great spot hanging out at the pub after cheering all the riders come in. Decent fish n' chips just down towards the harbour too.

I've done the 50:50 before, as above the whippets in the 100 were finished well before us. It's actually more like 55:45 with the hills loaded on the first day (apart from the the hill forts first thing).

Was going to do it last year as well, but... events. Seems like the bar/ents was a bit bigger last year with same planned for this year.

Have signed up to do this year again with my brother. It's a grand couple of days out - even when it is pissing it down all morning on the Sunday.

Will probably get the train down to Bournemouth and ride over to stay in YHA or something the night before. Will persuade the Mrs that she should come down and pick us up on the Sunday.

I'm booked on the 100 again this year in an effort to force some sort of training to be undertaken over winter.  Like has been said, plenty of entertainment to be had in the Red Lion afterwards.

Mrs DB wants us to do it on the tandem, haven't decided if 50/50 or 100 would be least stupid to attempt

I’m booked for the 50/50 and trying to persuade others although I don’t mind doing it in my own. Although booked last year I had flu that weekend so was a no go. Really looking forward to it.

What tyres though???

In that case, I think I’ll stick to the 100. Just didn’t want to miss out on the party!

ill be heading up from Cornwall, so probably hang out for the whole weekend anyway!

just got to make sure I don’t explode my bike on the dirty Reiver the month before

Tyres? I've used ralphs, saguaros and racekings. 2.2-2.4.

No reason other that they were whatever I had at the time that was fast rolling.

The 100 in a day looks good and right up my strada.

These are the type of rides I’m looking at doing more of - any suggestions on the ‘best’ type of bike for these events? When I say best I’m looking at comfort and efficiency rather than all out XC pure bread.

So far the new Whyte S120 looks pretty much like it’s built for the job?

I'd really like to do it one year, but the thought of driving to the Costa del Purbeck from the apocalyptic wastelands of The North and back on a Bank holiday weekend fills me with the dread.

Best bike? Anything. Run-wot-you-brung ethos.

I reckon there are a fine selection of fatbikes, singlespeeds, cx bikes, gravel bikes, geared hardtails etc in the pub at the start.

I've ridden it on a Trek Portland, a Fargo and a Bokeh.

I won't ride it again on the Portland because its not a very nice handling bike, but the Fargo was just fine, and the Bokeh was too.

Did the 50/50 last year on my vaya with 43mm gravelkings, was superb until the rear dropout snapped! That being said some of the rougher terrain would have been more doable with bigger tires, especially the beer long run which scared me shitless!

Just built up a pugsley so weighing up the pros and cons for next years event whether full fat will be too heavy going, so may go krampug or stick with vaya and carry spare drop outs.

Really amazing event, full of friendly people feeling the same dash love. BIKES, BEER, CHEESE, nuff said😁

...Xc pure bread...

There might be some pushing, but the luggage capacity is awesome...

Seriously, though, I'll probably be doing the 50/50, on my geared hardtail - mainly because it's the one that fits my luggage the best.

I did the 100 on a Planet X XLS cross bike, with 32mm tyres on it. It was fine.

As others have said, there was a world of variety on the start line and out on the course... 26ers, 29ers, cross, gravel bikes, single speeds, fat bikes, even nutters on fixed gears!

Run what ya brung.

Didn't realise this was open. Just need to check (with the Mrs) that we're free that weekend and, if so, I'll be entering the 50:50. I need a goal to aim at
