I screwed the cassette lockring onto the freehub without the cassette fitted. I know, I know, dumbass, but how can I get the thing off now? I tightened it fairly tight and I don't want to stick the freehub in a vice in case I damage it.

towel or similar cloth and a pair of waterpump pliers, wrap the cloth round the freehub to avoid damage, hold it tight with the pliers and undo with the lockring tool

Do you have any mole grips, if you do wrap a cloth round the body then use the mole grips. HTH

Just wrap the chain whip round the freehub body with a bit of cut up innertube under it.
