Friend looking to build up a frame. Orange Crush with 73mm width bb and boost drop out width.

Does he really need a boost specific chainset?

No. Try it first and check what the chain line is like before ditching a perfectly good Chainset.

No, it just give the optimal chainline for the best compromise of shifting performance across the block. On the other hand, it may be needed for enough clearance for larger chainring sizes.

Also, the chainset is not always what makes it boost - e.g. Shimano ones are (I think) but SRAM ones the boost offset comes from the chainring / spider.

As said above, no. I’m running normal XO cranks on a boost frame, just had to buy a 0 offset chainring

All direct mount sram cranks aren’t boost/non boost/superboost specific. You just buy a chaining that matches (not always required), from £15ish.

0mm offset = superboost
3mm offset = boost
6mm offset = non boost
