We will be in touch
I was just wondering if you would trust a chain that has been split & then needed more links added?
Ahem, like if you maybe tried SS & realised you needed a slightly easier gear, not me you understand, this is for friend of mine 😳
Cheers.
If my "friend" knew how to install chain links correctly then I'd advise him not to worry.
My "friend" has a chain that needed two more links when he put an expander sprocket on. He added the extra links with Shimano joining pins, so his chain now has three of them in it, and it's fine.
Obviously it would be me installing the extra links as I'm a proper man & my mate is a wimp, so don't worry about that, it will be done to the highest standards.
I shall inform [s]myself[/s] my mate that it's fine 😉
Cheers.
I almost have enought offcuts for a whole chain. Mixing brands is fine on a singlespeed right?
Done it loads of times, on anything up to 10sp chains. The timing chain on my tandem is made up of the leftover bits of other chains.
If you don't feel confident joining with the original pin then just pop the next outer plate off and use a quick-release link, but I've never had a problem with taking a pin out and putting it back in.
As long as the chain is genuinely newish you should be fine. Be sure to ensure the 2 two new links aren't tight (push them back and forth sideways to loosen) and the pins correctly inserted- even on both sides.
I saved up enough off-cuts over the years to join them all together to make a new chain, it worked fine, so Im sure yours will be fine.
As long as you use either Shimano joining pins or some quick-link you'll be fine.
I made a mistake once joining a chain using a pin that was pushed out from the link, then pushed back in... I works OK. But before you hit some steep climb full power out-of-the-saddle, make sure:
A. someone is filming it
B. someone has their finger on "dial 111" button
C. a circus theme music is playing loudly.
😆
