😆stunt pads
I used to have problems with "self preservation" Dianese knee/shins, they used to move on impact. Needed to get sweaty before they'd 'stick' properly. Not very impressed
Changed to Troy Lee Brian Lopes knee/shins - much, much better. They have a lycra knee 'sock' which the plastic armour Velcro's on to. They didn't slip or move in crashes, was impressed by them.
Now run O'Neil SasTec knee's (changed to running clips for DH so don't need shin guards) and been very impressed with them, seem to mould to the shape of the knee and stay put very well, and are comfy.
Don't think it's anything to do with Velcro, just the design / cut of the overall piece that's the deciding factor.
the US army has stopped using velcro on its gear for the same reason - buttons are now preferred.
The noise factor is something the US Army has in mind for this rather than your button fascination. Do you have a link to this one?
So now the hitlist includes High Rollers, 661 and Dainese pads, and the Fox Triad shock plant. To be continued...
Only read the first post but basically the OP has bought the wrong size or fit of pads and is blaming the velcro?
Oh man some people on here are NUTS!
Is there any kit you actually get on with?
It can't all have been that bad, you don't seem to have crashed to the point where you are no longer able to post rants about equipment that most people are able to get on with just fine... perhaps your brakes worked a little too well?
I almost dread to ask, but what's wrong with High Rollers (apart from them being the poor relation to Michelin Wild Grip'rs)?
oh shit.
you're that guy 🙄
I ride a Stumpjumper that has a fox triad rear shock and a maxxpro highroller while wearing my 661 velcro fix pads.
Not noticed any major problems with any of the above.
Maybe you should give up biking and just get the bus?
I think you are having extra problems as you are wearing the pads over your jersey or that you just have crap pads that dont fit.
Try the O'Neal Sas Tec pads as Blake said, they are a lot better fitting and even let you go wild like Cedric yeah!
Alternatively, spend the time learning not to fall off and when you hit the local trail centre you wont look like an off the shelf newbie with your pads on
Oh, that High Rollers thread, one of the all time classics.
I await an update to inform us that his local bike shop, whilst oiling the chain, installed the drive side on the left rather than the right and he's only just noticed that shifting gear is slightly difficult.
I know, I know, oh right, you're supposed to wear the pads INSIDE your jersey, etc...
God though I do notice that on this forum posts criticising products almost always get stamped on. There is such confidence in manufacturers, totally unjustified. Great for keeping prices high and standards low.
And yet-
Maxxis High Rollers ARE $hit in mud;
Fox Triad shocks ARE $hit especially the Specialized ones which you can't even replace with something decent without calling TF Tuned; and
661 and Dainese pads DO slip like m***********s (on skin, jersey, thong, whatever).
LOL @ Stopadoodledoo.
and even wearing different shirts underneath,
This may be the problem. I wear my 'armour' next to the skin.
ETA: I'm glad someone raised it already. Didn't appear on my reading of the first page.
If I can be bothered I'll just gaffa tape my knee pads to my leg. No chance of slipping then.
Maxxis High Rollers ARE $hit in mud;
You need to ride faster so they clear 🙂 Then they work fine in the mud.
Armour should be worn next to the skin (damn, beaten to it).
You could always superglue tortoise shells to your knees and elbows. They are organic and environmentally friendly, will not move and if you are struggling to locate any, I imagine there are a few buried in the Blue Peter garden.
Having just read the thread about high rollers and you not noticing your brakes being swapped over, your not putting the elbow pads on your knees and your knee pads on your elbows are you?
To be fair Clong, I've done that the morning after a heavy night on the turps.
its quite clear the problem here is sensitive nipples, hence being silly enough to wear a layer under the body armour.
try a bit of vaseline and some surgical tape or plasters over your nipples if the body armour you bought s the wrong size and doesnt fit tight enough not to rub when riding your bike 😈
philconsequence - Memberits quite clear the problem here is sensitive nipples
On his elbows? I can see why that would be problematic
Thanks - clearly I've been using the wrong lube the whole time. Saliva just isn't enough.

It is usually worse if the OP makes bone statements and uses the equipment incorrectly and has a history of going off on one in a really unfounded way.
Oh.
What is a bone statement?? nb pads used correctly. Correct size on a "normal" body shape, trying on skin, jersey and jacket, trying mounted variously high on arm, low and middle. Sorry I don't mean to be ratty but I don't see anything unfounded in any of my statements on this thread...
NASA makes significant use of Velcro. Each space shuttle has ten thousand inches of a special Velcro made of Teflon loops, polyester hooks, and glass backing.[6] Velcro is used everywhere, from the astronauts' suits, to anchoring equipment. In the near weightless conditions in orbit, Velcro is used to temporarily hold objects and keep them from floating away.[16] A Velcro patch is used inside astronauts' helmets where it serves as a nose scratcher.[5][6] During mealtimes astronauts use trays that attach to their thighs using spring and Velcro fasteners.[12]
Looks like nasa are still using it... taken from wiki
Correct size on a "normal" body shape
Everyone is different, even 'normal' shaped people. You're either just unlucky in not fitting 661 pads or you're doing something wrong as clearly the massive majority of other people get on fine with velcro.
If you're absolutely definite that something is red but everyone else is telling you it's green then any sane, sensible person at least considers the possibility that they're wrong (or colour blind...)
Just like some brands of cycling shoes don't suit certain people even if they're quite normal sized in the foot department.
But if the astronauts needed any stunt pads, they may come into problems and wish they had buttons.
The fastening medium is only at fault if it fails ie. It opens. Having armour move or slip is due to the straps whether they are fastened with velcro, buttons or whatever, and the fit of the item. I've tried 661 armour on and neither size fitted. I had a dainese suit with velcro fasteners that was a perfect fit and getting the pads to move or slip was all but impossible. If you're right and everyone else is wrong then screw the companies get on dragons den and make millions.

You do realise Nasa retired the shuttle fleet - and if the rumours are to be believed, the repeated velcro failings played a major part in that decision.

Seeing as velcro was reverse engineered from stuff they found at the Roswell crash site, I doubt it 😉
A bad workman and all that jazz........
You need to grow some balls and stop blaming the kit.
Holding solid rocket boosters together with velcro O-rings was always going to be a challenge.
They didn't retire them in the 60's though 😀
My balls are fine!
Still reckon pads generally could do with a fundamental redesign. Along with the bra and the toilet seat.
Along with the bra and the toilet seat
Can't work them either?
jhw, buy some poc or troy lee t-bones. 661 pads are comfortable, but pretty light duty. Get the right size while you're at it. If people are able to race dh and have their knee pads stay on I dare say they will stand up to your rattling.
I recommend having press-studs surgically attached to your arms and legs then you can clip the pads directly to those. Then use a nailgun to reinforce the fixing.
Alternatively I can heartily recommend using old soy sauce as the bottle on my sodding desk will not shift come hell or high water.
Needs to talk to Bodyform, they seem to have cracked it
cracked it.

:O)
