So.... that cheap medium ASR-7 on evolutionimports.

Should I buy it?

I would need to buy some forks and a headset for it, but everything else could be shared with my 575 so I could use it as an Alps bike.

Good idea? The (n+1) bikes rule would suggest that it is. I have the spare cash, but I'm trying to move house this year, so should probably save it.

Someone please go and buy it, and put me out of my misery!

Dave

Oh yes. You do. You really do. You want it? Get it.

Mine's great, yours should be, too.

argh!

don't tell me what I want to hear... tell me what I NEED to hear. Tell me it is a silly idea, and I should save my money and just ride my 575 at trailaddiction this year.

(sub-question: which forks for an ASR-7?)

You would also need a new rear wheel build as it's a 12x135 swinger.

I've got flows on pro2 for my 575, so a change of adaptor would sort the 12x135 issue 🙁

That does look very nice... how much are the float 36s?

came VERY close to buying one and posted a few thoughts as to why in my "which £1000 FS frame" thread.

http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/recommend-me-a-1000-160mm-fs-frame

Was about to click "buy" when I saw the Orange Alpine 160 with CCDB for just over £1000 on a PSA thread (still there for ~£1200 in 16").

The ASR is an insane bargain, cheaper than a heckler with a better shock, but the Alpine was too good to miss. Still got to build it up!

Have you read this: THe comments about it being a big mountain machine that's perhaps not as great on the tight techy stuff slightly put me off the idea of it. I think an Alpine would be a better all rounder myself.

sparky I read that and a similar US review, which seemed to suggest it was down to the Yeti's length. Yeti size recommendations are weirdly large; I'm 5'10 and would have bought a small regardless of yeti's recommendations (they reckon a small 17.7" frame fits someone down to 5'3" which is insane) but the yeti has shorter chainstays than the heckler, and the medium heckler and small yeti have the same length top tube. So I reckon if you bought the frame that fitted, not the one that yeti recommended (and magazines no doubt tested) it would be fine.

Scott good to hear you like the yeti, how do they compare? for both bikes I was looking at paying used prices for a new frame so there's nothing to lose either way.
