Novice repair question - sorry in advance - but when I freewheel, the gearing has stopped kicking back in immediately - after some frantic shifting up and down it does 'bite' but something's clearly wrong and it's getting worse. Do I need a new cassette?

sounds like the freewheel.... what hub you got?
I take it you mean you can pedal but your not getting drive? When the cassette is buggered you dont get drive but you do get banging as the chain skips.

Sounds to me like it's your freehub that's playing up.
Thanks - I've only been riding properly for about a year, so is a freehub something that needs regular replacement or is it more likely to be a repair job?

You can give it a service, shimano sell them seperatly for some hubs, you would need to know what you have..
