been thinking one would be handy, but not a regularly used tool, so idea for a project.
20-25mm box, M10x100 bolt or old bolt from a mech and some kind of sliding gauge.
anyone made one? pictures?
Someone had bodged something from this post;

Oi! That's not a bodge, it works every bit as well as shop-bought tools
From my post in the other thread:
(I've got a 10mm threaded rod with a couple of nuts on, which when stuck into the rear dropouts and tightened in, becomes a perfect straight edge on the axis of the axle... Then add the rear axle from an old cup-and-cone hub into the mech hanger hole, and et voila- perfect mechhanger straightener, just get the 2 sticky-outy things perfectly parellel.)
Drac, still a para medic i see
Northwind
that would work i guess but not the tool i am looking for... sweeps hand past in a smooth motion.
Yup.
A Paramedic with a lump hammer which I never use on my patients of course.
Drac comes calling
What about using an old rear wheel, the axle should fit into the mech hanger then you can allign as required.
Yep, I used an old bolt thru axle and associated flange nuts etc. plus a bit of flat bar threaded onto this axle.
Basically like the shimano version but rougher, then I added a 6mm threaded bar 'feeler' mounted in a slot to set the distance to the rim.
Add a bit of pipe to fit over the axle and it works a treat.
Yes. A spacer, some nice straight angle iron then I just bolt it to the hanger and use some callipers to check the measurements at different points round the rim. Adjust as needed.
I think it can be done by eye OK.
It's not so precise that 1-2cm at the rim matters IME.

You normally use one of those lump hammers?
I need pics of this mech hanger in action please, as I can't work it out in my tiny brain
Thanks

Yes it can. But it's easier if you can 'magnify' the bend to make it easier to see and straighten. I've done that by simply threading an old cup and cone axle in and visually aligning it with the hub axle. It works. ๐
As mentioned above - a rear week with a threaded M10 axle works a treat.
Thread it into the bent hanger and twist until the 2 rims are parallel.
Done that plenty times.
