Has anyone else done a 12 or 24 hour ride with mates, on or off road?
We've done one 12 hour in Woburn, with other riders popping over to join in for a bit. That was a good ride, especially the doughnuts and coffee at the end.
Now I'm turning my thoughts to a 24 hour road version. My initial idea was to set an out and back route that would be achievable in 24 hours. So you would ride out to the furthest point, and then if you made good time you could ease off on the way back, stopping for food or a catnap.
The tricky bit is deciding on how far to ride out. And riding as a steady group and not racing I'm guessing 15MPH average'ish.
So about 160 miles out starting at 12 and reaching the turnaround near midnight.
Anyone want to tidy my idea up?

I prefer the idea of catching a train to somewhere and riding home. Once you work out what your average is, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with a good guess of the distance. Just make sure you under-estimate as you can fill any slack time with additional cake stops.

I think train to the destination and ride only back. Out and backs can be pretty depressing if the back isn't going well. If you're riding new terrain/roads and heading home I find it easier to stay motivated.

I did Barnstaple to Bristol offroad. Train to Barnstaple and then ride home. We didn't do it in one punt but having raced 24-hour solo now, I'd love to give something like that a go. Perhaps a seven deadly spin...

there was an artical in ST mag a while back about something similar (i think it was dave?)

it talked about doing a few loops, longer and shorter ones, allowing you pop home and pick up supplies at meeting points of the loops.

I've thought about something similar; a big loop to take up the majority of the time, then get to your local area and tailor them to complete the time.

Hmm I'd not even considered traveling out. That would be better, and yes I would under-estimate as I'd still want to be smiling at the end.
One of the bits that appeals is the night riding during summer on roads.
I don't think I'm being naive here, but I'm sure logistics would be pretty simple. A small group could split the spares, food could be bought on route or stop for food, lighting wouldn't be too much of an issue on roads possibly battery sets or Joysticks. And as long as you picked the right day you'd only need a windproof for the night time.

How about doing an Arrow type of thing if you know what they are. Groups of mates starting wherever they want to and aiming to finish at one single point 24hrs later.

That sounds like the sort of thing I'd need a German bloke to sort out.
Living in South Bedfordshire my first thought for a route was to go South West which would take me out Salisbury Plain way.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a site to help me plot out a route using minor roads.

Rather than riding 160 miles, then turning round to ride back, how about riding an 80 mile diameter circle/wheel ?
Imagine your starting point as a hub, ride up a 40 mile spoke, follow the 240 mile long rim, return via the same spoke, or if there's any problems, cut it short and return via a different spoke. Avoids the risk of being committed to a 160 mile ride at midnight.

I don't mind 24 hours offroad, but the thought of where my riding skills would be after 23 hours on the road with other traffic suggest it's not a good place to be doing it.

Appealing idea though. ๐Ÿ™‚

epicyclo I'd probably have a nap, and be aiming to return on quiet roads through the night.
Looking at the traveling out option - you have to go a ****ing long way out err not surprisingly ๐Ÿ˜
I've already got a few that are keen to do a 12. six out and six back, which I guess is Audax territory.

As I couldn't make the 3Peaks, I'm having a long steady ride instead. I've plotted a 125 mile ride, 45 out - known 35 mile full off road loop and 45 miles back. Taking the crosser and will be trying to ride at a slower steadier pace. I'm quite taken by all this Audax stuff, just trying to get past the long socks and SPD sandals is the hard bit ๐Ÿ˜•

Friend and I planned Paris to Newbury in 24 hours - including the ferry time. We spent ages looking a ferry routes/times that would allow us to get to Paris for about 9am (with a mate in a van), ride to ferry port, get ferry, then ride to Newbury within the 24 hours.

We finally got it figured out... and decided we couldn't be bothered to ride it!

Classic ๐Ÿ˜†
I think the best thing to do is either join a proper interested club or do it alone.

what Gary Lake said.

SDW round trip should be about 24 hours for most mortals (although 6 hours for 80 miles from Eastbourne to QE Park on Saturday sets quite a benchmark)

Maybe out and back on different routes?

e.g. Start in Bristol, follow the Nroth Somerset/Devon/Cornwall coast roads to Lands end, then come back allong the southern coast. Easy enough to cut short too, just follow the main train line on the way back.
