[Closed] Disconcerting 'cracking' sound from my front end - bail on my ride?

Riding down to Waterloo for the train out to Dorking for the inaugural ride of my new Mojo, doing a few hard stops along the way to start bedding the brakes in, every now and then I get a rather loud crack from the front, seems to be coming from the headset but not sure... It's an Angleset if that makes any difference... All seems to be tight to me, but a bit worried by the noise, it's pretty loud! Any ideas on the possible problem? Might duck into Head for the Hills before hitting the trails, just to be sure...

...I have a P-X road frame - that creaked like a door in a scoobydoo episode when I 1st rode it but just sort of settled down without me doing much

Hope it's all fine

Check the headset isn't loose. Check the wheel is in properly and done up. Check the disc mount bolts and calliper mount bolts. Check bar/stem bolts.

My Scott Genius carbon creaks like a bugger all the time near the headset and especially when hard braking to a stop. Played with lots of things and no luck. Probably needs the headset removing and resiting. I wonder if this is just a problem with carbon frames

Not on my Carbon Nomad ...no noise or creaking at all. It sounds very much like the headset has loosened so definitely check it out or get the shop to if they built it and show u how to adjust it. Loose headsets are bad news for the bearings...

I hope you're not making excuses because of the rain and potential mud ๐Ÿ˜‰

Probably the headset. Just ride and make adjustments.

Get it checked properly. My brothers frame took ages to work out what the noise was, went through everything but a change of headsets eventually sorted it. I wasn't so lucky, cracked frame...

Are the forks new? I eventually tracked down one particular creak to a loose steerer tube/crown press fit join.

I had this on my (alu) MTB a couple of weeks ago, eventually cured it by stripping the whole front end down and regreasing every single bolt. Must just have been one of the stem bolts that was dry or something. It's not made a sound since.

Angleset probably. Did it on my bike until I tightened headset LOTS and added LOTS of copperslip.
Fine now.

saw this the other day, which suggests it might be an angleset issue (post 29) http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?p=8015086#post8015086.

There's also a link in that thread to another on ridemonkey, which suggests it's pretty common.

I get this on my road bike when I turn the bars a lot. It's the headset bearings which are knackered ๐Ÿ™‚

Take forks out and put steerer in vice. Twist legs. Could be bonding to crown on those nasty cheap forks.

I had it last year when I was braking hard on the front while hitting a pothole. Carbon forks only. Massive CRACK. Shat myself, stopped. seemed ok. rode on.

Pretty sure that'll be your angleset slightly out. But whilst on the subject of cheaking front ends and excellent tip I picked up to fettle CSU's which creak. Is to turn your bike upside down and apply some locktite 290 thread lock to the steerer joint, leave for a couple of days upsidedown so it cures fully. Works a treat, no more noise. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Well, I'm back from my ride, was a great day out (though I suffered with cramp for nearly the entire ride, no idea why, took on plenty of electrolytes etc... 'twas a right royal pain in the proverbial ๐Ÿ™ )

Anyhoo, ducked into Head for the Hills and asked the very helpful chap there if he could take a look, nae problem he says. Turns out the headset was probably a wee bit not tight enough, so he whacked in an 2mm spacer (just in case the stem was sitting direct on the steerer) and tightened things right up. Seems to have fixed the 'cracking' noise, didn't notice it at all on the ride thankfully.

Huge thankyou to Head for the Hills, they're a great bunch in there, wish they were my LBS!
