Had Deore disc brakes on my commuter for a while, but recently the rear caliper has succumbed to a sticky piston, and I'm not keen to spent £100 on a new set of the same brakes if that's going to happen again in a years time. What does everyone else use for a bike which is never washed and has all the road grime, salt and muck blasted at it every day? Are hydraulic brakes asking for trouble or have I just been unlucky?

I have tried freeing the stuck piston but I think it's a gonner unfortunately.

Replacement Deore caliper for about £25?

The cheaper tektro brakes I've had on a few bikes seemed bombproof, still dear than a caliper 🙂

You may have been unlucky but I've had 6 years of commuter use out of a pair of Avid BB7s and they are still going strong. They're not without their drawbacks, most noticeably the constant need to adjust the pads as they wear out, but they are certainly powerful enough and changing pads is a lot easier!!! 🙂
