Disc brake squeal - just contamination ?

Probably a dumb question, but after a spot of fettling, my brakes squeal like a dying pig. I THOUGHT I cleaned them, but they still squeal. Does that mean that I didn't clean them properly (so I need more alcohol and elbow grease on the rotor and maybe new pads) or is there another reason they might be squealing?

Glazed. Try sanding them down with a Dremel. Worked a treat for me today.

Could need bedding in again of you've been adjusting stuff or cleaning the discs.

Sram? My Shimano organic brakes used to squeal a bit initially when wet (or just after a clean with isopropyl) but a couple of squeezes and it stopped until they got wet again 5 mins later - the rest of the time they were fine and no issues swapping between wheelsets. My Sram, as supplied on my road bike squealed all the time until I changed the pads (organic ones labelled "quieter") and rotors (swapped paceline for centreline rotors). I have 2 sets of wheels with the same rotors on; I swapped to the other set yesterday and one of them started squealing (front I think) it would go away after a couple of pulls but then return next time I applied the brakes. Tried getting them a bit hot to see if that would sort it but it didn't seem to - will have another go this week.....

Sram seem to be worse for it than Shimano IME.

Shimano
i’ll try some sanding

by the way - the little clip that goes on the end of the bolt that holds the pads on - what’s it called and where do I get a new one when (not if) I lose the one that’s on now?

I contaminated mine with some laissez-faire GT85 spraying.. cleaned discs and pads with isopropyl alcohol and then got them hot on a longish descent.

They still complain a bit in the wet until they get some heat into them..

I've just solved squealing of my Deore 4-pots by a huge clean of rotor and pads, sand of pads, then repeatedly rising in boiling water. After that I toasted in the oven for 10 mins at 150*c.
Silent and powerful still a month and 6 rides later. 🤞

I've never bothered to replace them and am yet to have a set of brake pads eject themselves from the caliper (as a result of that bolt falling out - I did once lose a set when I forgot to put the bolt back in after being interrupted while finishing a brake bleed then going for a quick test...)

That's sort of what I suspected - it's hard to imagine a safety-critical component depending on a tiny bit of loose wire.

You can always put a split pin in instead of the bolt anyway if you lose the Snap Ring.  Does the same job.

In this household it's a ping****it

(along with various other split rings and springs and stuff)
