[Closed] Disc brake piston problem

Hi all,

I just tried to replace the pads on my Shimano M575's. I thought the piston was sticking so pumped the level a few times and the piston came right out and some oil leaked out. I've pushed it back in again and now it doesn't seem to work properly at all. I'm assuming I just need to bleed it but was wondering if they have any sort of seal that I might have broken when the piston came out?

Thanks,

Chris

YOu might have damaged the seal - you might not. You will certainly need to bleed it.

Thanks Jeremy, if I have broken the seal is it replaceable?

I've just ordered a bleed kit which comes with 50ml of oil, any idea how much oil I will need per brake?

The kit I've ordered is a large syringe with 4mm tube - is it simply a case of attaching it to the caliper bleed nipple, putting the Shimano funnel thing on the lever reservoir and pushing oil through until no more air comes out?

I can see this all going horribly wrong...!

I've done that with an xt caliper. I think a gulp of air gets in there though. A bleed later and all was well.

If a bleed doesnt fix it - then its new caliper time - should be around £25 ish.

As for bleeding - I dont think the funnel came into use 'til this years versions.

It will need a bleed and most probably will be fine tbh.

50ml will be more than enough oil.

Probably a bit late now, but would have been a good idea to strip and clean everything before refitting the piston, it's quite possible you may have pushed dirt in there which won't help with sealing. If you were suffering with sticky pistons anyway, now may be a good time to perform a strip and clean up.
