I'm thinking of buying a Dirty Disco bike. It'll be my first CX bike and I don't know anything about suitable chainsets or what hydraulic discs can be run with road brakes.

Any advice much appreciated

First off, unless you buy a TRP or Hope converter, or wait for the new Magura brakes you can't run hydros. So cable BB7/5 Avids will do the job nicely (I've got them on my disc cross bike).

As for groupsets, I've always run Campy so whatever cranks came with the grouppo. Maybe look at either the Shimano CX specific cranks, or look at a road compact crank.

px sell a few 46/36 cranks (I think you can customize your build)

rose bikes have got nice cheap Shimano CX50 36-46 cranksets in, albeit 170mm arms:-

Thanks for the answers. So do BB7/5 Avids work with standard road levers?

You need to get the road versions of either, - bb7 road or bb5 road

What's going on just above the rear dropouts on the seatstays? - I can't see any mention of it on the On-One site.

BB5 roads for £15 (minus rotors) on CRC. Says rear only, but i think with an adaptor they would work on the front as well.
