Have put new (superstar) pads in the rear of my XTs.  Pushed pistons all the way back and fully topped up the fluid at the lever end. Also topped up the front whilst i was at it but as pads (shimano) had plenty left there was no pushing back of the pads.

Now the problem... The rear lever has significantly less movement than the front. So to have the bite point where i like it, just before they touch the bars, the rear is almost parallel to the bars and has about 1cm of throw whereas the front has about 2cm and sits at an angle of almost 45deg. So both now feel very different.

Whats going on???

Clean and lube the pistons.
Try putting one new pad in the back and one in the front, with one of your half worn pads from the front moved to the back.

New pads in rear are thicker than your front so will result in less lever pull. Replace the pads in front and the lever pull will be similar to rear and you are sorted.

DickBarton - they should compensate for different thickness pads if the pistons can move thru the seals properly.

Some pads are thicker than others.

You can take the wheel out the front and pump the brake lever a touch then replace the wheel. This should help make the front feel like the rear.

I did this with both front and rear on my Sram G2 brakes as I didn't like the excessive lever throw.

Too much oil in the rear. Losing some oil will give you more lever throw to achieve the contact with the pads.

XTs have bite point adjustment screws; can you compensate with these?

Also, I think you need them wound out when pushing the pistons back or bleeding/ topping up fluid.

Suspect that should be the case @tjagain, but I've not found they do...lever throw increases and pads don't appear to compensate.

Symptom of sticky pistons. Clean and lube the pistons.

With XTs do  you not have to wind out the bite point adjustment screws before you bleed them?  If you had changed the settings on those before and then rebled them they may now be off

or sticky pistons of course

Also watch out for worn out and thin rotors.

Rip them off and swap for Lewis brakes... I'd that the answer these days?

All fixed now thanks for all your help.

I cleaned and lubed the pistons and pushed them back in but then they wouldnt come back out again. I could hear a squelching sound so concluded something wasnt right with the seals. Luckily i had a spare caliper from when i went from 2 to 4 pot on the front. New caliper on and a bleed and i'm back in business.

Cheers all. Helpful as ever x
