Deserted bike mystery gets town talking

Who does this bike belong to?

It has been causing puzzlement in Cockermouth since it appeared more than six weeks ago in Market Place.

The blue British Eagle is attached with a lock to a bike rail opposite 4 Play Cycles, a helmet is dangling from the handlebars.

Dog walker Andy Rodger, of New Street, first noticed it on June 24.

"I remember the day as I was still shocked from the Brexit result. I walk two dogs here every Monday and Friday and noticed the bike. It's a good bike and well-maintained."

Over the weeks, however, it been gathering cobwebs and starting to rust.

Andy, of Cockermouth Petcare, said: "It just worries me that no one has claimed it. At first I thought someone had maybe cycled to the pub and then got a taxi home but it's been here so long now."

Adam Stitt, of 4 Play Cycles, said: "At first I thought it was someone working in the area who was arriving earlier than me, and leaving later but it's been there a long time."

If that was near me a time lapse would show parts disappearing until it was a frame + lock in a week tops

The owner probably couldn't hack the ridicule over his helmet not matching his bike..

Probably a Dutch owner; Dutch cities are stuffed full of thousands of bikes that people forgot where they left them.

Someone has gone on holiday, realised the bike is still locked up and they are now home and CBA to go back to get it.
