Looks like things may be getting tetchy again! Recently went for a Sunday ride up into shining cliff wood. Parked my vehicle just on the access road to the woods as the layby was full as usual. Parked considerately and well up the bank to the point where it was leaning at about 30 degrees!! Left basically mountains of room!! Had a cracking ride and returned coupla hrs later!
Packed up bike/kit etc was just about to drive off when I noticed something under my wiper blade. Jumped out and was greeted with a piece of a4 that someone had taken a bit of time over!! On the paper, said do gooder had been to the bottom of the road taken a photo of the byways and highways sign, nipped home, printed it out and returned to stick it under my wiper!!
It stated no vehicles, powered by any mechanical means are allowed to use the road unless gaining access to land. Now I'm presuming this was refering to the motor, but on a technicality were they refering to the bike they'd seen me cycling away on??
Needless to say they chose the pussy option of the under the wiper trick and didn't wanna face it out, but how sad?? Oh and I wasn't the only one parked there, as i returned a family were piling out with their 3 dogs and had no love letter!!
Any other locals had any bother up there recently??
I'm sure there was moaning recently about people parking on the access road (obviously everyone does mind), so I'm guessing some local person has printed up a bunch of these flyers and is flyering all the cars.
Isn't the road up to the top a restricted byway or some such nonsense anyway, meaning you can actually bike it. Also the signs in the woods suggest that cycling is only permitted on 'wider tracks' or something, which also implies that there isn't too much of a problem with you riding there (with the exception of on the off track 'bike trails' which there is a well known problem with people riding, especially in the winter mud).
I'm betting they're just annoyed by lazy people getting in the way of the access road. That sign doesn't refer to bikes anyway, mechanically propelled vehicle = car or motorbike, bike = human propelled.

It is a killer climb to the top tho ๐
there isn't too much of a problem with you riding there
Not everyone sees it that way.

that link is over five years old though. As Joe says, bikes are not counted as mechanically propelled
On a similar vein, one of the trails over towards black rocks had a tree laid across it at the weekend. Not sure if it was intentional or not, but it looked like it had been placed there... So be careful if you're riding round there at the mo.
Not everyone sees it that way.
That was what I meant when I said people have a problem with you riding singletrack in shining cliff ('bike tracks' in the article).

The commission says permanent damage could be done to the site, which is an area of Special Scientific Interest.
We really should have some respect for this
A Site of Special Scientific Interest or SSSI is a conservation designation denoting a protected area in the United Kingdom. SSSIs are the basic building block of site-based nature conservation legislation and most other legal nature/geological conservation designations in Great Britain are based upon them, including National Nature Reserves, Ramsar Sites, Special Protection Areas, and Special Areas of Conservation.
I think even SFB will agree with this There are cheeky trails and being irresponsible this appears to be the later. I dont know the area though so can you ride there or not?
They are fed up with poor parking, its a singletrack road and people tend to park in the passing spots. It's a private road also and they probably pay upkeep on the road so will be keen to stop usage. would suggest you use the railway station 1 min away.
If the track is signposted with a red or a blue arrow then you can ride along it but not take a motor vehicle along there. Suck it up and don't park there again.
Hi,
Bit off topic, but where is shining cliffs wood? I live locally but didn't realise anything was there.
Anybody got any directions?
Cheers
Josh.
I'm not gonna park there again mainly coz I don't like any cheeky **** touching my motor! I was up at black rocks also at the weekend. I'm from wirksworth and rode there 20 years ago on my falcon, never had any problems back then! Didn't notice the tree mind, which trail was that on?? I did however notice a lot more tyre tracks up by the mast and trig point than I've seen before! I don't wanna upset folk and consider myself a really corteous rider, I even stopped riding to let some old dear by with her two dogs rather than riding, but riders do get a bum deal at times! Just look at all those ****s on horses riding two abreast up on the top roads with no licence or insurance when they boot your car!!
Er, bit off topic, but a lot of horse riders do have insurance through the british horse society just as cyclists have through ctc, they still churn paths up big style mind!
The tree in question got *ahem* moved by someone, but I'd just keep your eyes peeled in case any others crop up in the area. I won't describe which trail it was on as I'd rather keep them hush hush ๐
Consider yourself lucky, when I once parked up a farmers road, off into the verge to keep the road clear while I searched for a group of missing kids in the hills I returned to find the farmer had put a copy of his (unofficial and entirely illegal) no-parking sign on my car. In permanent black marker. On every panel.
Fortunately meths clears it off without damage. Again he was too chicken to speak to me directly.
Fair play! You local as well. If so you'll know that you very rarely see many folk up where as was on about. We walk up there too with the kids and even in summer it's really quiet, so what is the problem with some people! Walkers! There's a well placed n missing for some of those types!!
Never, ever had a problem in ambergate woods.
