Front and rear are different check the Shimano tech docs for your specific bearing sizes.
The bearings in a Shimano rear hub are ¼” in diameter and each race contains 9 bearings. Front hub is 3/16?. Expect to pay around the £/$5 for good quality bearings, Grade 100 or better (try SJS Cycles in the UK).
Cheers SV will try them 🙂
Your local bike shop will sell you them for about a quid if you ask nicely they usually have them in tubs of a 100 for workshop use
Ordered £7.50 in delv - bargin - got the grade 10's for a few pence more - cheers SV
@pantsonfire - I'll remember that for next time but I'll get the money back from my mate who I am doing it for 😉
I got a Deore 495 rear hub for £7.50 plus postage from On One recently, perhaps they've still got stock?
£7.50 for the hub or just the bearings? No way would the loose bearings cost THAT much! A couple of quid at the very most!
1 x 1/4 inch Diameter Hardened Chrome Steel Ball Bearings (Pack of 10) Grade 10 (G10/1/4inch/10) = £2.95
1 x 3/16 inch Diameter Hardened Chrome Steel Ball Bearings (Pack of 10) Grade 10 (G10/3/16inch/10) = £1.99
£1.50 postage and VAT - BTW would have been about £3.50 if I got the 100 gade bearings but got the 10 grade - hope these last longer - would have cost be £1.50 to drive to LBS 🙂
grade ten bearings. Grade Mozarella hub shell 🙂
Should have just got el cheapos off eBay...
So thats why the bearings have gone and the hub shell is fine? I am doing it for a friend and the old bearings are cheap and shite so wanted to get decent bearings and pack them in and forget - so happy to pay and extra few quite - Jesus it only £3 - bet you spend more on beer in a week Stoner 🙂 It would of cost be £2 to LBS and £1.50 to drive there and back - would have cost me £3 + £1.50 postage if I got the std 100 bearings - blimey.....
No problem - same as I ordered IIRC. Typical response from the massive!
oops
Never had a problem with the hub races unless there was severe corrosion in there, just seems surprising the cost for loose bearings.
just seems surprising the cost for loose bearings.
I guess if you got std bearing from a bike shop then prob would be a couple of quid but higher grade bearings and postage + VAT add up to a bit more - happy to pay a little more and service the hubs myself and get 2 good working wheels for my mate to use - no Biggy really 🙂
std bearing from a bike shop
I went to my LBS and asked for the required bearings and I got, for my £1.99, a set of Weldtite bearings in some cages. Needless to say the Simply Bearing invoice is but a small price to pay and they look very nice in their little packet in my 'spares' box, well whats left.
Thats fair enough. I never bothered with high quality ones in mine as they were changed regularly due to the amount of filth they were exposed to in the winter! Just binned them in the spring and put fresh ones in.
Don't think these will get to grungy as will be used for short rides and probably infrequently and not in deep skanky mud 🙂
7.50 for the hub and skewer. The bearings were shot on mine, axle thread a bit dodgy and freehub body gone too - bargain!
