Hi guys and girls,

Wanting a new Deore rear mech, but can't for the life of me figure out the difference between the deore shadow M592 and the M591!

I have a normal shifter, where you hit with your thumb to get the chain to move to the bigger sprockets.

Are they both the same, just a different cable routing, and the shadow is skinnier? Is there any benefit in one over the other?

Shadow mechs stick out from the side of the bike way less, I think I'm correct in saying the part that sticks out most with a Shadow mech is actually the QR nut. Great for tight rocky paths.

Shimano's pic helps

Thanks Tucker.

Can anyone lend any confirmation to the fact that the shadow mechs are stiffer, and shift better?

no, not stiffer IME. supposedly shift better, but i couldn't tell the difference between my XT normal and SLX shadow.

the shadow, it is said, is more likely to break after a hit, but less likely to recieve one. the thin secondary hanger is what bends and can't be replaced.

From my experience the Shadow has a strong cage tension than the non shadow equivalent. Can't really differentiate between mechs when shifting tbh.
