I normally only buy cranks every 5yrs or so but I've stupidly damaged my Saints after just two years (ran too many spacers and the non-driveside spindle/arm have ground-down/developed play over time).

So. Where to start/what to buy? I quite fancy Middleburn (as a secondhand purchase). but of course its Sq tp only

Ideally I'll be running just a 1x9 (or 1x10) set up.

Thoughts ideas?

The new SLX looks good at c£88 too.

Why did you end up with Saints? Fairly heavy things in the DH market really. What are you using them for?

Happy with my X9's on the Hope GXP converter. The missus has some very nice carbon ones on hers which are in the keep for 5 year price range.

Is your budget about 90 or is that just what you saw?

I got a really good deal on the Saints and I'd used the original Saints for 5(?)yrs before that.

90 is the max really as I've just bought a new set of forks and hadn't anticipated I'd need new cranks too 🙁

Middleburn very good and not square taper only. I'm running both types, Square taper RS7 and RS8 on Royce BB and RS8 on Hope ceramic BB.
Still have an RS3 for when I get round to building that Retro bike thing I have in mind.

Chain reaction are doing 17% off a minimum £99 spend today for St Patrick's Day, if you're after a new SLX or similar.

Middleburn great but I'd not discount ISIS if you can get hold of an SKF BB from somewhere.

Just got a new SLX for one of my bikes.

It's bloody lovely. Much nicer looking than XT in my opiinion, barely any heavier and looks like it'll keep it's finish much better.

I wouldn't piss about with anything apart from Shimano cranks personally.

How about these: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/shimano/m590-deore-2-piece-design-chainset-9-speed-175mm-soiled--ec060855

I spotted them yesterday, look like they could be a decent price (though I'm not up to speed with how they stack up price-wise against other options...).

They're more expensive than buying a non-soiled set from ze Germans. The newer m610 version is even cheaper at Rose.

This site can be quite useful, bearing in mind the limitation that only registered retailers are listed, but I've found useful for getting a feel for what deals are around.

Dare I mention ebay? Often some deals to be had.

Used XTs for £50/£60. I've tried all sorts but keep going back to XTs... That said, I have square taper Middleburns on my Curtis and they're lovely. Not touched them in a year of running them - I'd be tempted by some RS8s for the Five if/when I change the XTs...
