Just the cassette you have to worry about as that is where the smallest spacing is. So you can use a 10 or even an 11 speed chainset with a cassette and chain one gear less. 9 with a 10 spd crank, 10 with an 11 spd crank.
What about a 9sp chainring with a 10sp chain?

i,v running a Campag Super Record 10spd chain with 9spd quick link on my Morewood using the 9 spd cassette. A perfect change and looks uber pimp to boot. No glitches over the last couple of months at all....Go for it.
