Looking to get Jnr a DH bike as his Mega is a bit brittle and doesn’t inspire confidence for uplift days. The YT Tues Core 2 looks good, and by that I mean it’s the cheapest new DH bike I can find, it’s only “let down” by the fact that its a 27.5, and a 5 year old design and with everything else moving to mullet or 29er, I’ma little worried that we end up buying a bike that may be difficult to sell in the future. My questions to myself is do I take the plunge, there is a £700 discount currently or hang back in hope that other brands will start discounting bikes to the sub £3K area…. Any YT owners out there that can comment on the Tues or indeed anybody else spotted any good discounts in a size medium.
If you're buying a bike now with half an eye on it's resale value, it makes more sense to buy a 29er. If you just want a bike that your son can rag around for the next 5-8 years, the spares will be a 'a bit' cheaper, and you're not going to find it hard to buy things like wheels and tyres, then why not? It's a decent bike and seems pretty cheap.
Don't hang about too long, I think 2024 will see all the killer deals vanish as most of the bike companies are beginning to sort their stock levels.
1. DH bikes are VERY hard to sell anyway. But yeah you're right about that, it'll be harder again.
2. I may be able to do you a GT Fury in a mullet, medium, ridden last week by @ianpv 's boy at FoD.. But there's plenty here on PB. I'm slightly torn on whether to sell as it's our 'spare' bike.... but in reality i'm not sure it'll get used

I'd go used if i were you.. There's lots of very very good bikes out there for sale.
There's a few Tues up on PB and many have been there for a while.. i think you'd honestly struggle to sell it on for anything decent. Mullet/29 is the way forward really, ideally one that can do both.
My lad and I still ride 27.5 Tues from the 2016/2017 generation. Cracking bikes. Haven’t tried to sell them so can’t comment on that but the bikes themselves are sound.
When you buy a DH bike you need to forget about resale value. If I were you I'd start here and make some offers... https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/list/?category=1
Most of those bikes have been for sale for months.
My YT Tues was a mint bike but I haven't ridden one for a long time. The age of the design doesn't matter so much when it's a proven 4-bar platform that just works really well. I'm kind of worried that they'll ruin the new one by chasing the million-pivot, idler trend. I'd love the new uncaged Ohlins version but it would be wasted on me these days. I wouldn't buy a 29er unless I was racing which I would never do anyway.
I’d go used if i were you..
Absolutely this.
27in DH bikes already have terrible resale value. And none of them will have had any R&D for years as it's all 29 and mullets these days.
Should be easy to find one in good nick at a great price.
the main reason I'm keeping a weather eye on SH value is that Jnr is still growing, so will possibly transition from a Medium to a Large. I don't want to have a 3 year old bike that I can't sell, would much rather something a little more "current" in the eyes of a potential buyer to increase my chances. As noted there are a lot of DH bikes that have been for sale for an eternity, all massively overpriced in my view - buying a bike with no warranty is a risk and needs to be factored into the price which many sellers are not doing. Also not seeing much in the way of discounts for new DH bikes yet, maybe a little early with the '24 bikes starting to land.
I had one of the cheaper 27.5 Tues from new, got it for a great discount and sold it easily.
Really good bike, rode great, well made, easy to work on and all bolts were correctly torqued up from the factory, not something that is always done.
Rode mine at local Stile Cop, Pearce tracks, Revo, Antur and even took it up Snowdon, great times.

Main reason for that is that there's very little in terms of supply. It's really hard to find a DH bike in stock mostly, so they rarely discount as they simply don't have to, they just sell out anyway. I don't know how many SC V10s come into the UK for example, but it doesn't seem to be many and they go in seconds.
I have to ask but does Junior need a DH bike? Especially if he's still growing. You could easily find something more robust and confidence inspiring than an old Mega that will also be much lighter and easier to ride then a proper DH bike.
I love DH bikes but one of the reasons I can't justify one anymore is that regular bikes are so good. I'm probably twice the size of your kid but my current uplift and DH bike is a Norco Sight and it's very good at the job. (My Geometron was better R.I.P)
I'm always looking for any excuse to buy a DH bike (or encourage someone else to!) but they're not always the right tool for the job. I well remember how lumbering and boring they are on anything other than properly rough, steep trails.
This would be an awesome bike for a growing lad... https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/3718926/
Sharkattack, agree with pretty much everything you say - only point being it was a 3 month old Mega! Nukeproof swapping to a new frame but given the breakage rate reported, this will just happen again- at least we have 5 years of new frames to look forward to. He rides Fort William and Glencoe so that justifies a bigger bike plus he's hoping to race next year so may be under biked without a DH bike.
Fair enough, didn't realise that you lived in the only part of the UK where you can reasonably justify a DH bike for regular use. I wish Glencoe was my local DH track!
Shame about the Mega, I thought the new model looks decent. Didn't realise they were prone to failure.

Without wanting to sway you. At FW and Glencoe, 95%+ of the bikes being raced even from 13 years onwards are DH bikes. Even the 5% that are not, they will be at the next meeting. Some of that may be peer pressure i admit, but DH bikes are just faster, stronger, better at places like that.
I'd always go 2nd hand for this unless you have the money to burn. Most Dh bikes (Commencal V4 excluded) are incredibly robust and will last a long time. A 2 or 3 year old bike will probably only cost you what you'd lose in depreciation wheeling the bike out of the shop so the warranty has no real value.
I bought a 2016 Tues 2 years ago for £1000, it was mint.
Again, go used.
Oh and 5yo design? I compared the numbers and my 2016 L was the same as a 2021 M, it's likely much older than that. Not that there's anything necessarily wrong with that.
Airdrop might still have some good offers on their outlet bikes. Would love a Slacker Park, they look so good.
Buy him a DH bike. He’ll love it. Can you get a Mullet set up and switch the front wheel? Or one that has a flip chip to run both sizes?
second hand is a good idea. Lots out there and I expect there are lots that have been on PB for a while who will let you haggle.
if going new you could look at a Tues or the Vitus to save a bit of money. I wouldn’t get hung up on the resale value as I think the 2nd hand market for DH bikes isn’t great (and probably mainly propped up by Weeksy😜). Ask him what he wants and go from there.
