I went down hard on my shoulder while crashing about on Exmoor yesterday: messing up a simple hop-the-branch-at-speed manoeuvre. Cracked my helmet too.
My collar bone is OK and nothing looks distorted. But various movements are painfully limiting, particularly across the body. So I'm taking Ibuprofen, using frozen peas and gently moving it through the range-of-motion. Oh and I'm MTFUing too.
What have I done, and is it likely to heal OK without medical attention?
Separated AC joint or Bicep tendinitis? Both very painful especially tendnitis they'd both would limit your movement some what. If it still gives you problems tomorrow make an appointment with your Dr, go to a minor injuries unit or a walk in centre.
I know how you feel I used my shoulder as a brake about 2 months ago. I drove home had a hot bath thinking it probably be alright in the morning. Well I woke up next morning and couldn't even move it so a trip to A&E. Had an x-ray not broken but have damaged the ligaments and tendons, Still ****ing painful now in certain positions and still can't lay on that side.
Was seeing the A&E physio but have now been referred to the main physio unit at the hospital. Have been told it will take months to heal (physio done similar injury and says his still plays up 12 months later) and it would of been better if I just broke the bone and not done soft tissue damage ๐
as Drac says - i landed on my shoulder whilst descending Whernside (bloddy walkers), still finished (in pain) but had a minor step to my AC joint, once healed it still feels "funny" not painful if i lie on that side, i had physio and a bit of strapping (i found out i'm allergic to zinc oxide tape!)
google and inform yourself:

A few years ago I landed on my right shoulder and spent 3 months not being able to comfortably lift my arm above my chest but decided to mtfu and grin and bear it.
I'm learning to drive right now and find that if I want look backwards, over my right shoulder, my foot comes slightly up on the accelerator. So it seems as if I've 'done something' lasting.
Get thee to a doctor's!
Probably what Drac said. Unless you've totally ****ed it, it'll be right in a couple of days.
Heathenwoods - Everyones foot does that when they look over their right shoulder. It's your hips moving that does it.

Healed! It's a miracle! Praise be to the goat-headed God!
(I must remember to take into account when i take my test next month)
It's simple biomechanics and years of experience as a driving instructor.
I'm guessing you've had a fair number of lessons haven't you...
Did mine two years ago, took 3 weeks before I could drive and about 6 months before I was back on the bike, [even after physio]. Still hurts now after a good workout at the gym or a good ride
If I was you I would have it checked out

Or maybe the goat-headed god... gotta keep sacrificing the virgins just in case.
I've had, "some," but am almost fully sorted now, the foot-lift is almost subconsciously taken into account; perfect manoeuvres; I just need to put together a faultless 25mins or whatever in early Nov.
*takes big deep breath and counts to ten*
Goan is right it's a common fault with learner drivers.
WOW! That was hard to say.

Well done; presidents have been given peace prizes for far less than that.

Maybe I'll wind a prize at ST awards.
Well he's definitely done more than what that Obama done for his ๐
Well you'll certainly not win a prize that's for sure. ๐
Not for spelling anyway.
OK so I had a slightly uncomfortable night and today I took medium doses of ibruprofen and did lots of gentle movements to the limits of discomfort. The went for a 5 hour hike to keep rest of body moving. Internet diagnosis suggests minor tears in the rotor cuff but no muscle or nerve entrapment.
Presently it seems improved from last night. My instinct is that it will heal if I stick with the kinetics and pills programme and don't stress it for a couple of weeks e.g. no biking, boxing or press-ups and go gently after that. I have to go abroad next week for work. If it's not feeling properly on the mend by my return, I'll go see the quack.
Thanks everyone.
Hi Buzz,
when I hit that tree on Pitch Hill it took over a month for my shoulder ligaments etc (and ribs!) to get better, and they're still not 100%. The doctor said I'd just have to live with it. Hopefully it'll not be that bad.
Any Physio friends Buzz, they'll give you some tips for getting it going and again and reducing permanent damage, worked for me.
Don't just go to any physio. Speak to your nearest professional rugby or football club and see who they use. Go to that physio.
Mine is currently the England Rugby Union physio and one of the Team GB cycling ones. Don't mess about with anything except the best, it's not worth it.

Do you go to Whitty Pask & Buckingham ChrisE?
i'd go to see a physio, although, i agree you should try to get a reccomendation. i damaged my rotator cuffs, and they still arent right. But seeing a physio improved it tenfold
I did my shoulder 5 months ago and is only now about right - I did ligament, nerve and muscle damage to it landing heavily and popping my upper arm out of my shoulder (but not full dislocation)
I'd see a Physio and get it looked at as soon as possible and a bit of self massage in the meantime. I'd try not to overdo it with it until you've had it checked out in case you make it worse (not speaking from experience at all... honest)
Buzz ..Maybe you may need to go to ..infirmary and beyond.. ๐
No I go to Ian Horsley

Just rest the ****ing thing.

I use these and can highly recommend them http://www.wpbphysio.co.uk/sports.html
I use these folk and find them absolutely fantastic pretty cheap too.
Yes Goan NHS is brilliant but when I enquired about seeing a pysio for a shin problem I was told it be about a 12 week wait.
Longest I ever had to wait was a fortnight.
Have tried NHS and unfortunatly had bad times. It seems their philosophy is to patch you up, get you to sit at home while things mend then get you to learn to live with your reduced ability.
There are a few sports specialists (mainly private I'm afraid) who understand cyclists, climbers, runners etc and do whatever they can to get you cycling, climbing, running or whatever back at 100%
I've bust legs (caving) arms (climbing), now a shoulder (biking) and afraid have learnt the hard way that you need to see a sports surgeon and sports physio
C
Well I guess you were either lucky or don't live in a busy area or you local NHS is better equipped.
ChrisE - nonsense. I know a lot of physios - it comes with being married to one. A large number of them do work for national sports teams and local pro sports teams - all of them work for the NHS though.
What exactly is a sports physio anyway? I'd prefer a musculoskeletal or orthopaedic specialist physio any day over a sports physio.
Kuco - that was in glasgow, edinburgh and the borders.
Goan, you're entitled to your opinion and I'm quite happy to stick to mine. That said I broke a clavicle (with 60mm overlap), a scapular (down it's full height) and a finger all in September and yesterday I was riding round Ingleborough on the BWs, not yet 100%, probably 98%, but will be 100% in 4 weeks. Having physio 2 or 3 times a week at the mo.
