Been a flooring fitter for well over 35 years now so knees probably not great
question is. is cycling good or bad for the knees .

On holiday at the moment and done some good walks but had a pianfull right knee more when going up stairs .

hired a bike and over the last week have done about 20 miles ish a day for a week and the pain has all but gone which prompted the question above and wondering if I should do less walking and more biking

It's low impact, but be slightly careful about having some float on the pedals, and think about crank length if you're, um, of non-average height ๐Ÿ˜‰

Try going to a doctor and complain about knee pain after telling them you ride a lot.

Cycling is bad for your knees for various reasons, but do some sensible muscle training and you can overcome the problems.

My knees were ****ed before I started cycling seriously. They are a million times better now.

Both and neither I'm afraid.
Cycling is sometimes prescribed for recovery from knee ops but tell a gp that you ride a bike and your knees hurt and they'll likely tell you to stop.

Think you might have to trust your body on this one. Do less of the stuff that hurts and more of the stuff that doesn't. Cycling does build some muscles that help protect the knee joint but it can also lead you to neglect other useful muscles for knee protection like hip abductors.

I've always been told it's good,as it obviously strengthens them. I've got a bleeding condition which can cause bleeding into the joints, so cycling is a plus for mine.

Exactly what Onzadog said. In fact it gets my vote for most sensible post of the year, so far.

you are rotating your knees while they are not carrying you body weight.
providing you don't go mad that's got to be good.
I had a huge break below and into my knee about 5years ago. the consultant had me on the turbo after 6 weeks, whilst I was in a brace.
I wasn't allowed to weight bear for months, but the rotation was just the ticket.

Seat position? If i put my seat up ~1" too high my knees start hurting within 30mins.
