book a flight to Munich/Salzburg/Innsbruck and ride south. get a train back or return from a different airport.
there are lots of well-known routes but you can just as easily make up your own depending on what you want. stay at Pensions (B&Bs) so you needn't take your own sleeping bag as you would if staying in mountain huts. also get a breakfast thrown in for ~30€. then stop at a bakery and take your own food (rolls, cakes, etc) or stop at a mountain hut for lunch (~15€ for a good feed).
you also get a sense of having achieved something at the end of it all.
