I have access to a cyclocross bike which is currently on slicks, fancy giving CX a go, which uber cheap tyres work well enough just to give it a go?

Cheers, was split between those and rocket rons, reviews seem to say the rons may be better suited to current conditions as the contis clog up in very muddy conditions, anyone agree/disagree with this?

Depends on the mud.

I ride the contis above in bad conditions and find them as good as anything else I've used.

In really wet/loose mud they work fine. In thick/clay mud nothing really works and the whole frame just becomes one big ball of mud unless you have spare bikes and pit crew.

I wouldn't get too hung up on tread and grip. In CX it is relative as even the best grippy tyres are no match for a big fat mtb tyre. Tubs are good by all accounts but require a significant purchase of wheels and tyres. Tyre pressure is just as important. Get it as low as you can so you don't pinch flat.An overpressure rocket ron is not going to be as good as a correct pressure conti x king etc. Some consideration is worth while but beyond, file tread, intermediate and mud there is a lot of marketing.

Also dare I say it, rider skill comes into it. You'll get people crashing and struggling on certain setups and using it as an excuse. The fast lads are just fast and have the skills to be able to use their strength.

If you are not racing, my general riding is done on Planet X uncle John tyres. I find they have a good balance of grip and speed.
