Supposed to be heading up from Portsmouth to Cwm Carn tomorrow & BPW Sun for a mate’s 40th.

The Air B&B place needs to be cancelled before 3pm today if we cancel.

Personally I don’t mind the idea of snowy/slushy/icy trails, it’s more the getting there that I’m questioning.

Stupid idea to go?

Mountain Bike Range South Wales posted yesterday that you would be mad to go to Cwm Carn.

BPW is closed until this evening at least.

Yes, you're mad 😉

"Just for your information we don't offically 'close' any of the official <span class="_5afx"><span class="_58cl _5afz" aria-label="hashtag">#</span><span class="_58cm">MTB</span></span>trails due to 'weather events' as we have many sites that are not manned and in reality it really depends on your level of experience and equipment etc. However, due to the Red severe weather warning that has just been issued this morning for the Cwmcarn Forest Drive area in South Wales we would strongly advise that you do not venture out on to the MTB trails for your own safety and the safety of o<span class="text_exposed_show">thers who might have to be tasked to rescue you in the event of an incident. Any response to an incident will likely entail very prolonged delays due to the weather conditions. <span class="_5afx"><span class="_58cl _5afz" aria-label="hashtag">#</span><span class="_58cm">Afan</span></span> is on the outskirts of the area and will more than likely be severely affected as well."</span>

Yeah, we’ve canned the idea. Shame really but would be really stupid.

I'm a Cardiff local in the middle of 3 days off and planned to ride every day but there's no way I'd attempt going anywhere to ride for the next few days!  Just not worth the hassle.  I did think about heading to the 417 Project and riding the indoor barns as it's all main road between me and them but even they're shut as the drive is unusable.

Just had a ride/hike up to BPW....  all those little hollows that make good whoops and jumps are filled with snow.  So one moment it's 6 inches deep, then 2 feet deep.

Pretty much unusable.

I'm in Merthyr but thinking about getting over to ride at A fan tomorrow. Anyone know if the trails are ridable in the main. Forecasts have looked like it is much less effected than Merthyr.

Ranger posted on Facebook that Afan was less affected than Cwmcarn but asked people not to ride as they are worried about emergency vehicle access. It was that which tipped me over into saying “sod that, then”.

Well, as I didn't manage to get out of the remote mountain top remote rural area of Whitchurch in my car today I've written off go very far at all at the moment. I'm thinking of pedalling up to Castle Coch in the morning, but I need to fix a flat first and my track pump is in the garage. Which is a pain because I'd have to shovel the snow in front of the door first, and the shovel is in the garage.

I admit, I'm not very good with snow...

Also, just to be pedantic, it's Cwmcarn, not Cwm Carn. 😉

My cousin is about 2 miles from Cwmcarn and the drifts are now halfway up their conservatory. I think it may be a big ask to get a ride in there 🙂

You'll struggle to ride even fire roads unless they are well trampled by foot traffic and that makes them bumpy and annoying.  I had to turn back after a few yards when I got to the forest.  The ride up there was interesting.. will have to post some pics on the other thread.

I appreciate that there are concerns for safety etc.

Afan trails are pretty much clear...   nothing more than a dusting at that end. Bear in mind Zigzags is shut so Wall is somewhat curtailed.

In the cafe at Glycorrwg drinking tea before heading up Whites.  A bit more snow this end so expect the occasional drift but not bad.

Obviously use common sense and let someone know where you are heading if you get out.
