is this normal? i put a new 3x10 xt groupset on at the weekend, first ride and im getting a crunching noise in the top gears (biggest rear sprockets) when pedalling uphill....now ive not lubed the chain from new given i thought they came with some stuff on them, and obviously the weather is muddy/wet/gritty etc

it did seem to evenutally clear off once i got back on the road climbing etc.....

is it likely to be just the mud/grit etc along with the combo of not having any specific lube on??

or does the crunching suggest the gears/setup isnt right in some way?

FWIW the gears go into every gear fine, no slipping/skipping (i have got some rub on the front cage in the bottom 2 cogs though)...

just after some thoughts as its that bloody long since i rode in mucky conditions such as yesterday i cant rememeber if my gears ever used to make such a noise?

Not sure but I don't think that stuff that comes on the chain is meant to be a substitute for lube.

If its just the largest sprocket, it could be the limit screws not set right so the chain is rubbing on the second largest spocket.

Clean the chain first, then check the limit screws. A;so check its not the fron mech rubbing

hmmm righty probably is the lack of lube then, it was proper proper mucky too, wet/muddy/gritty the whole lot ...purely forgot to lube it up before and didnt have any with me when out...

i can vaguely remember getting crunchy gears when in peak grit and such, just cant remember it being so loud, hence probably the lack of lube causing it even worse?

richmtb - its probably the top 2 from what i remember, but the 1st one more so....im pretty sure the screws were fine, as i did this from new with no chain on with a ruler to help get it pretty bang on...
