i think i have found out what this bloody noise is, i think its 100% for bottom bracket, i was out today and as i was pedaling something below my feet felt like it was about to drop off, so i stopped pedaling and then it felt like something was lose but kept rolling around? but then it stopped. could the BB be the issue here.

easiest thing to do is take cranks off and BB out and see.

had an annoying click on my bike I solved yesterday with a new BB.

ive had the cranks off a few times and had a look at the bb but that was the first time i had the bb off ever lol, seemed fine greased and cleaned it up, the middle bit if supposed to be lose isnt it? put it back on, still creaked when under high pressure

my bb seemed fine, but changing it cured the noise!

middle of BB isn't supposed to be 'loose' on external BB's - it's held in place by rubber seals at each end.

well when i took mine off i took the drive side off first and the middle tube came off with it, then i took the other side off, but the middle bit didn't seem secure it just kinda came off when i pulled it, then just stuck it back on and screwed it in, is this normal ?

Yep normal. The centre is very easy to come off but when in the frame is held very secure by the two sides of the bb

OP you need to grease all threads and mating surfaces on the bb in order to eliminate it as a source of the creak.

Folk often find this but the cause may well have been that the previous BB was needing the above treatment and there was nothing wrong with it.

possibly cynic-al - the threads were quite dry. I had a spare XTR BB 'lying about' and having cured it didn't want to take it all apart to put the old one back! I've kept the one that came out as a spare.

hmm i might just buy a new BB, ive had this hope external one for a while now, but it must be the bb as its defo something to do with pedaling and its not my crank or pedals

Chainring bolts?

As on numerous threads here it can be other apparently unrelated components.

There's **** all to creak in a bb, particularly an external one.

it cant be chain ring bolts cause it happened when i stopped pedaling as well, like something was spinning coming from the bb area ?
