I have a 2008 Kona cinder cone hardtail with a set of Rock shox Reba forks @ the front. Whilst riding there is creaking sound echoing through the frame. When I saw over the bike with front brake on and push forward I can hear this creaking. I have taken the headset apart and cleaned & regreased but I have had a research round and read the steerer tube itself can develop a noise? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next to fix this? The forks are still functioning well so it would be ashame to have to change them & costly.
If it is the steerer it can't be fixed. If you have friends with a similar size fork ask if you can borrow them to see if it still makes the noise when fitted, hopefully the creak will still be there.
Sure it's not the bottom bracket creaking traveling up the frame?
Interesting, thanks for the suggestion. I did take the bottom bracket apart yesterday and examined that. Yes I do have another set of forks to try to see if that eliminates the noise. I am not sure which part of the fork it is if indeed it is but from what I have researched the steerer can often be the culprit as opposed to the stanchions. I guess I need to establish the cause then make a decision. I don`t want the noise to be caused by the forks as they are going to be pricey to replace as the noise is pretty unpleasant and loud while riding.
Could be the break pads moving in the caliper. Does it only happen when breaking? seated? When pedaling?
It happens when pedalling , I can make it happen when off the bike and just syandimg over it pushing the bike forward with the front brake on.
Sounds like stanchions creaking in the crown. They can be removed and cleaned and refitted.take your front wheel off and twist the fork legs. See if it makes the noise.
i had a pair of Reba's do this one before ... mine was the taper ring
in the headset. greased inside and out ... no more creak!
I'd also check headset cups
